Quote:/font1h,121b,121He needs to discount the non-selling stuff out of the "specials" area if they aren't selling, the same records can sit there for months on end and it gets fustrating to the point where I can't be arsed to check the site because I have a perception that it'll just be the same records for sale when I last looked (granted, it's worse when you only have a dozen odd 45's in that section).b,121b,121He could prob shift them on ebay quickly, esp with his rep. Maybe I will suggest this to him. b,121b,121h,121
font class="post"1b,121b,121Your assumption is he has one copy of each. But reality is he has stacks of them and sells those titles every week. (I know people use to ask me to discount records that I always listed, thinking they never sold when in fact they were my bread and butter.)b,121b,121Gerald is a good guy. I used to sell to him regular back in the day. Always good to deal with.

Someone always gets paid by us before we put something out 99.99% its the right guy. Even with the best intentions once every few years it turns out you paid the wrong guy. Most people are pretty understanding and helpful in resolving these odd mishaps. With the Tolbert i did recently so we ended up paying the label and the writer for mechanicals but ended up bringing more opportunity for all involved so all good at the end of the day.

Quote:/font1h,121b,121What's Jazzman's reputation for taking care of the artists he reissues? I'm not suggesting he doesn't. I've just never heard much re: his rep on that one way or another. b,121b,121h,121
font class="post"1b,121b,121In my experience, he does the right thing. He actually hit me up at my old job chasing some royalties for the Larry Ellis sample on "Success", but as it wasn't my area, and none of my colleagues had dealt with the clearance at any stage, I couldn't be much help. He'd kinda got his wires crossed because he should have been chasing Universal Records anyway, but nevertheless, he was obviously anxious to make sure Larry got paid, which I thought was cool. There are still a few independents that flake out on that kind of thing, unintentionally or otherwise. He doesn't strike me as one of those dudes.
Wait so he chases around sampling royalties on behalf of artists?
DocMcCoy"Go and laugh in your own country!" 5,917 Posts
Well, no, not exactly. On this occasion, he was trying to trace outstanding royalties on behalf of his licensee, who I presume was Larry Ellis. In other words, he was doing what you'd want your sub-licensee to be doing; making sure you got paid.
Jazzman's swell. He reissued a record I discovered... no really I did, and then when he tracked the dude down and got a shit load of copies mailed to him he sent me 2 spare copies from across the pond. They went from Ft Worth to London and then back to Dallas. Whoa! Ho*kup was my broker throughout the deal.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Nah, the record ain't really that hot IMO. I like it, but with a local bias. And I did call the dude pre jazzman, got an answering machine, and my efforts ended there. Glad he reissued it. Not sure how it sold though.

font class="post"1b,121b,121If memory serves, didn't Keb Darge poke fun at salty American collectors by calling them colonists (as in, merely British overspill) in an issue of Big Daddy?b,121b,121Either it worked, and he's previously rubbed one of our colonial brethren up the wrong way with it, or this is some mega-collectro in-joke retort.b,121b,121b,121b,121b,121b,121b,121b,121*please excuse the un-intended grouping of 'salty', 'overspill', and 'rubbed'
hahahahab,121b,121"Americans = merely British overspill"b,121b,121Anyways, we've established there are no known US equivalents of JmG, or at least any that do exist are on the secret squirrel list. Is Leon Levitt still around?b,121b,121There are certainly plenty of private modern soul vendors on the Steve Plumb and Ian Clark tip still active in UK.b,121b,121I mess with those when I have a spare wad. Once a year maybe. Thousand dollar records for days, those guys.
i would say most of us who have gone on the search of old musicians (and old records) have burned folks. either by not giving enough money or straight taking items claiming no value to them. b,121b,121yankees and teabags are all the same... we just talk differently.

I'm waiting for that release with open ears... a dude I respect recently had it and sold it saying it wasn't that hot. But Milton's the MACK, so I'm stoked to give'r a rip and form my own opinions... As he would say: Keep it Up!
