It makes more sense for European people to equate a Spanish person as being a person from Spain, plus there aren't a lot of South and Central Americans in Europe. b,121It's Americans who have re-contextualised it, as you have done many other English words. Which is perfectly natural, but it's definitely up to yall to come up with a acceptable alternative.
