repair old ipod or buy new one?

my old ipod headphone jack is not working. It seems to play files fine but no output on the headphones. I even hooked it up to my car adapter (the one where it connects to your radios fm signal) and no dice. There used to be a spot that repaired ipods but I just got back from there and they no longer do the older models, just the iphone and itouch. So now my only option is the apple store but are they gonna charge up the ass?

my apple store won't even repair iPods. luckily, the computer shop on my block did fix mine when it broke after 2 years -- but it ran me $90. I figured I've put enough time uploading 80gb of music onto it that it was worth repairing, and it's one less piece of electronics in the landfill. b,121b,121now if apple had announced a new line of 200 or 250gb ipods for the end of the year, i would've been tempted to cop one of those instead of making the repairs. but instead, they downsized the largest available iPod from 160 last year to 120 now. b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/weaksauce.gif" alt="" /1 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/WHYMUSTICRY.gif" alt="" /1

font class="post"1b,121b,121Has anyone done this?? I too want to know if it's worth it...have been having ipod headphone jack issues myself. b,121b,121I found somewhere the suggestion to get those mini little dental cleaning wires (like a micro pipe cleaner), dip it in 70% alcohol (and kind of shake off residue so it's not soaking wet), and then use it to clean the inside of the headphone jacks- make sure you give it plenty of time to dry before trying to insert headphones.b,121b,121The first time I did it, it worked amazingly well- practically back to normal! The main issue I have w/my headphone jacks is that I have to push it really hard to one side to get full stereo sound, but when I'm walking around and/or driving, I can't really be doing that all the time and that's basically NOT what I'm down to do all the time. b,121b,121Since then, I've done this same procedure several times (now that I have a lifetime supply of 70% alcohol!) to lesser effects, but enough to make me keep my ipod for now without ditching it. b,121b,121Still wanna know if the $30-40 replacement jack is worth it though!

i took mine apart and replaced the jack and hold button assembly. 4 tiny screws, a little patience and your done. i had a broken ipod (hard drive issue) to rob the part from and it worked fine. found step by step photos thru google and also saw a way to push on the side of the jack (with case opened) and effectively make the jack tighter and fix the problem without replacing the part. best of luck, you can do it.
