Maybe it would be a more interesting label if the issued some of those LP's. Syreeta: S/T is my favourite Mowest release. Great production by her husband.

font class="post"1b,121b,121"What The World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin & John" was Mowest's biggest (only?) hit...a sound collage of gunshots, newcasts, JFK and MLK speeches, and the voice of a child who struggles to define prejudice ("I think it's when somebody's sick"). Tom Clay was a Detroit DJ, and after he had his hit, he followed it up with this album of maudlin recitations.b,121b,121/font1

I got that Tom Clay on a 45 donkey's years ago, and the album was a 50p charity shop score in the mid-90s. The single is one of those great, slightly oddball records that people either love or hate. I've put it on quite a few mixtapes down the years, and have had people say either that it's fantastic or it's really depressing. There's nothing else so noteworthy on the album, although I did spot a Deee-Lite sample on one track. I've hung onto it as much for its curiosity value as anything else.b,121b,121Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons' "The Night" was a big Northern Soul/pop crossover hit in the UK, and I'm sure I remember Thelma Houston getting a UK hit on Mowest too, probably with her version of "Don't Leave Me This Way", although it's not on that list.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I first heard that on an oldies station as a kid, and thought it was EXTREMELY oddball. As I aged, it sounded more and more like baby-boomer nostalgia as heard through news clips, but I still have a fondness for it. I don't want to call it a "novelty," but you don't hear too many left-field songs like this on contemporary hit radio anymore. And that interview with the little girl who doesn't know what "bigotry" or "hatred" is kills me every time.b,121b,121/font1

I'd include Air (the one on embryo) and moments of the 2 "Albert" LPs on perception (while more bloodsweatandtears rocked out, they have this similar undercurrent of melancholy). i would also throw in Sergio Mendes "Stillness" LP. not coincidentaly, most of these were advocated for and editorialized about in OnTheGo magazine's diggin in the crates section by one of my main diggin deeper influences, Ben Velez.

You're probably right.b,121b,121I pulled that Universal Jones record this past weekend after not having listened to it for quite I while, and I should clarify: It is "like Archie Whitewater" on the level of "being sonically similar--with the instrumentation and the way-frontal vocals and all that"; it is not, however, "like Archie Whitewater" on the (somewhat important) level of "being a very good record." b,121b,121Sorry for the bum steer.b,121b,121I think the only Air thing I play is "Realize," though I do sometimes bump Googie's "Missing Love" when I'm indoors during light spring rains.

Yeah, "HappySad" is a good way of putting it. I've always referred to this type of stuff as "multicolored sweater music" I definitely tried to capture that vibe on this joint.
