besides the occasional guest appearance at a friend's night, I only spin at self-promoted events where I bring in the door person and take 100% of the admission. Paid my living since the mid 90s. Turned over my twice-a-month Funk night in berlin to a friend and financed 3 years of digging all over West Africa with the royalties... don't ask me how that worked out, can't really figure it myself but it did.

That's some pimp shit right there. I'm jottin' this down on my Moleskine, hope the rest of you folls are too.
b,121The real question now would be what are you people playing?

font class="post"1b,121b,121Whatever they want that I have. Funk, soul, garage rock, hip hop, 80s, sophisticated world disco, whatever. If I have enough to fill a set, I'll play it. Now pay me.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I've always been kinda genre-specific.b,121Started in '95 with euro-library, softporn soundtracks, hammond-sleaze and french 60s pop, moved onto funk 45s in 2000 and now trying to have one last go at dj-ing with African Club Music from the 70s (Afrobeat, Afro-Funk, Afro-Latin, perhaps even some Highlife).
See, that's the thing. Some of the amounts people were quoting here seem to be the kind of cash you would get to play Commercial or Club Rap/R&B. I guess it also depends on the city and the night on which you're playing.

font class="post"1b,121b,121bingo.b,121b,121I find it funny some dudes on here, "I charge such and such"...most of those prices would be greeted with a laugh and a "get the F*ck outta here" in this town...unless of course you are playing club raps, and you white dudes playing club raps would get laughed out the door before you even set your shit up around here.b,121b,121If you are doing funk/soul/45s etc...be happy with $50-$100 and free beer, cause you aint getting anything more than that...no one really gives a F*ck who you are around here...Keb Darge would have a tough time gettin' a decent paying gig in Memphis..

font class="post"1b,121b,121so I suppose the Memphix DJs are young and stupid as well, they arent making more than $50-$100 when they play in Memphis...
Maybe 50$- 100$ goes further in Memphis, but hear if you DJ a wedding, you can ask 400$ easy, if your hot. Those Memphis Dj's should pack their 45's and head North to the land of milk and honey.

font class="post"1b,121b,121yeah weddings are a different game...shit, I get $600 for a wedding, but a bar and soul/funk 45s..$50-$100, pretty much the standard around here. b,121b,121Keep in mind, I said MEMPHIX DJs, not just Memphis DJs...just to show, even DJs with a name dont get paid here
