Rough Trade is the only label i find myself still obsessed with and consumer/object fetishist hungry for after all these years. they knew what they were doing, for sure. I came across a sampler of their singles recently, and damn if every band on it wasn't a band that other bands are trying to sound like today.

The Fall-ah (As Mark E Smith would say).b,121b,121The rest I encountered at the time and IIRC was so much pffftz0rs.b,121b,121Actually The Fall were patchy but I feel sorry for him with that Brix/Vivaldi affair (chucked him out of a nightclub-R)

It goes without saying that the SLF album and singles were a highpoint of 'keeping it real' in those dull post-punk days of '79 (notwithstanding Jake Burns later becoming a radio producer - always thought he was a tad suspect).b,121b,121Delta 5's track 'You' was a big sound BITD for about 2 weeks, especially on the John Peel show. My groovy History teacher at the time was a big fan.b,121b,121I need to rep my favourite post-punk band here too, the mighty and much under-successful Zounds.b,121Two of their very best (and therefore GOAT top 20 IMHO) were released on Rough Trade: 'More Trouble Coming Everyday' and 'Demystification'. Anarcho pop subversiveness.b,121b,121Robert Wyatt's 'Shipbuilding' needs to get mentioned too.b,121b,121Why 'shamefully' add the Smiths? For a while back then they were the only game in town. Marr is still a yardstick of energy and cool. They deserve a large andb,121 chunky helping of respect.b,121b,121As for the shop itself, I went in there many times in the late 70s and 80s and I can't front, it was a dismal and scummy experience.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I find myself coming back to this record over and over. It's just one of those things where the "whole is more than the sum of the parts" or whatever. On paper the idea of YMG should be corny or contrived, but instead it's beautiful and weird and more affecting than affected. I wish they had put out more music. Alison Statton's voice totally f-ucking slays me.

  • This is worth picking up:b,121b,121img src="http://warpmart.com/images/content/releases/large/RTBOOK01.jpg"121b,121b,121I actually just bought a copy as a gift for my band's (very small) label owner's birthday. Sort of a "Happy Birthday ... now let's step things up a bit".

I love me some Rough Trade, although I'm not up on the entire catalog. You'd think music based on deconstructing the tenets of musical composition would be better in theory than in practice (and it often was), but some of the post-punk records are incredible.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Fusk! i know what it means, but i had, um, some smoke and a clouded mind, couldn't think of the more appropriate word at the time. not lumpen, something along the lines of anarchist is what i meant. it seemed fitting for bands like The Pop Group, especially with songs like "Rob a Bank" and "We Are All Prostitutes"

font class="post"1b,121b,121I agree! YMG is something I put on often when I'm about to go to sleep. That's not a diss...it's hard to find a solid album for that.

Young Marble Giants RULE.b,121b,121There is apparently a YMG CD box set. I thought that was funny.

  • this was released around the same time as the record Harvey posted, and suffered a similar fate, basically disappearing, because Rough Trade went under very shortly after releaseb,121img src="http://www.themodernword.com/pynchon/nova_mob1.jpg"1b,121b,121Love this record and still wear the T-shirt
