  • It's about time he got back to doing straightahead soul music again. No bandwagon-jumping country songs, no "What's New Pussycat," none of that Vegas supperclub schmaltz. A couple of months ago in another thread, Soul On Ice disagreed with me, saying that Tom had never left the R&B behind. But still, with all due respect to SOI, you had to plow through way too many "Delilahs" to get to something with guts. So, I'd like to hear this when it comes out...b,121b,121

In short, it's bad 40 something hen-party music. And TJ's voice has all the subtlety of an explosive and unpleasant bout of diarrhea.

I am presently unfam with any credible (ie pre-Sex Bomb) Jones product, apart from the "Delilah" era hits, which are cornier than James Jamerson's feet ( img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headz.gif" alt="" 21 )b,121b,121Years back I saw some clip of TJ in the early 70s on a TV show where he was wearing too-tight clobber, perm, medallion etc. and doing some clown karate moves inbetween verses. In my mind, The word "FAIL" faded in over this montage of bufoonery and has such prevented me from checking anything.b,121b,121Good luck to the burly taff-done-good, but surely no-one outside of a meat market with a vaguely piscean whiff would ever ride?

I know they were in the Thunderbirds Are Go movie at least thanks to spending an achievement free Saturday afternoon watching it one day.b,121b,121On an unrelated topic, I remember way back in the day when I was first discovering the joys of hip hop a friend of mine excitedly informing me that the bongo break we were hearing on so many records was played by Sir Cliff himself. Many hours were spent debating this until a trip to a charity shop and a purchase of The Shadows proved him wrong once and for all.

I am most likely not going to be diggin the new release especially with some U2 love. Not my thing. Not to mention the guy was pulling ho's by the dozens before my moms was in diapers. He get's respect in my book.

font class="post"1b,121b,121That's the gospel truth, right there. Keep that shit in perspective, okay? He had his moments as a would-be soul singer, but he is still a lounge lizard. 75% of the time, his recordings are on some kind of swinging singles/supperclub/Love, American Style steez. Tom is cool in his way, but he's no Roy Head.
