I'm watching on the news and it looks pretty gnarly. I guess they were telling people "Don't bother calling 911 because nobody is going to answer. And there will be nobody to help" or something like that.

  • Most people that I've texted with this morning (fam and friends) are okay but without power and dealing with some minor house/apartment damage. I don't have any people close to the coast (Galveston, League City, etc), tho.b,121b,121The biggest concern is power. Might be a while before folks get power, and it's hot as hell down there.b,121b,121Still waiting to hear back from a lot of folks.

KHOU is reporting that while damage is bad, the hurricane wasn't nearly as bad as many had thought it would be in most parts of the area. Galveston doesn't look good though.

The coastal areas across a LARGE expanse are a flooded mess. I don't expect reports from east of Bolivar to be any better than the disaster seen there. b,121b,121Wish I could get specifics on Seabrook. The Kemah boardwalk and marina flooded fairly early on. Nasa Road One and Nassau Bay of course flooded. But those are all fairly usual/semi-regular things. They're watching Clear Creek, Taylor Lake, and Armand Bayou but hopefully they continue to hold.b,121b,121Buffalo Bayou downtown has run its banks in places. There's an interssection by UH that I saw on the news that looked to be flooded 5 feet deep. b,121b,121They're saying power will be out for a minimum of a week and up to 3 weeks in many cases. Austin is housing a large number of evacuees right now. Hopefully we've got at least 3 weeks of resources available.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Keep in mind, those pictures are from Galveston and other coastal areas before the storm really hit. That top photo of the dude hanging from the pole is particularly misleading. That was a dude clowning around before the storm. The news outlets just need to stop showing that shot.b,121b,121The real aftermath shots will be coming soon. I'm worried for the folks that didn't evacuate the coastal areas. There's a lot of them.b,121b,121Houston fared better, altho almost all of Houston is without power. Dunno about your trip to Houston. Even if the damage isn't as bad as predicted, 90%+ of the people in town are without power, and many might not get power back for a week or more.
