    There was quite an evacuation for Gilbert...but that was 20 years ago. b,121b,121Alicia was the last hurricane to do much significant damage to Houston...and that was in 1983. b,121b,121Point being, I hope Houston doesn't underestimate this storm. b,121b,121And all sorts of prayers for Galveston. Barrier islands aren't meant to last no matter how much sea-walling is installed over the decades.

    Some people are flipping out. Long lines at the grocery and gas stations. Plenty headed out of town. b,121b,121I'm supposed to fly to New Orleans tomorrow afternoon but that probably won't happen. I have the BBQ and two things of propane. b,121b,121My flight got moved up to 7:35AM and I think I can actually make it and it won't get canceled but the lady is not feeling this idea of sitting it out on her own. My dreams of finding copies of Salt this weekend may be crushed.

    Damn, only a week ago I was stressing about Gustav pummeling the Harvey Canal levee and flooding my childhood neighborhood. Now, it's on to stressing about Galveston and my teenage home on the west bank of Galveston Bay. Might as well be worried about the welfare of my left and right nuts.b,121b,121The Seawall, 61st Street Pier (for surfing), the jetties (for fishing), Bermuda Beach, Jamaica Beach, Indian Beach...all on the island. Spring Break 1987 was quite a week staying on the beach, making out with random girls, and smoking a joint for my first time (passed to us car-to-car by a total stranger at 60 mph). Then there were those Mardi Gras celebrations on the Strand...and the time we played at Ball High my senior year and our team buses were met with middle fingers and bottles as we went through the neighborhoods approaching the football stadium. b,121b,121Or how about the time when my friend Terry and I were sitting in the cab of his pick-up truck on our way down to the beach on I-45 with 2 of our friends riding in the back when we spotted this really sketchy-looking hitchhiker and cracked the Fusk up for 15+ miles after we pulled over and told dude to hop in the back with our then shook-as-Fusk buddies. b,121b,121Or how bout the time that my friend and I went down to the docks to pick up my uncle who had been out to sea for weeks, only to be met at the top of the ladder leading up to the deck by the saltiest seadog ever who promptly told us in some hardly decipherable mutterings that my uncle was either getting some quick poon in town or he had gotten drunk and fallen overboard.b,121b,121We used to fill up a big insecticide dispenser with beer like it was our own beach mini-keg. Those were the days of Body Gloves swimsuits and Suzuki Samarais. One time I was so drunk driving home that I apparently passed out for a moment at a light on 61st Street only to be awakened by someone bouncing a bottle off the roof of my Buick. Then there was the time when this girl in high school asked me to her drill team dance to be held in Galveston and on the way I got so drunk that at the dance I disappeared for 2 hours then got in a van and puked in front of a cop at a 7-11 then again at a beach party that I have never remembered one single second of. Better yet was taking the back way from Galveston to Seabrook through Texas City bent off that ecstacy...watching all of those refiniry lights go by like exploding supernova's.b,121b,121Speaking of Seabrook, wade fishing in the Seabrook flats, usually starting from the Seascape pier, was something that filled 3 summers straight for me. All the red fish, trout, and flounder you could ever eat. We'd fish the flats in the morning and the piers at night, even if that just meant bottom fishing for hardhead beneath the Spillway. b,121b,121One winter night I took a date out on the Seascape pier. We were sitting on the e far edge of it, just beginning to lean in to each other and my damned keys fell out of my pocket into the water. So having been in that same water hundreds of times by then, dumb me decides to get in the freezing water and try to feel around on the bottom for the keys. Of course I couldn't find them, I was close to hypothermia, and had to knock on a sorta-friend's door past midnight to have them give me a towel and a phone to call my dad. b,121b,121I miss vanilla cokes at Tookie's, barbeque shrimp at the Crazy Cajun, the volleyball pit at the Oasis, and boating through all of the adjoining waters of Clear Lake, Taylor Lake, etc. b,121b,121Anyway, let's hope this storm has mercy on the Texas Coast...b,121b,121

    The story of what we called the Toddville Mansion in Seabrook, for a long time the most prominent landmark (aside from the Kemah Bridge) on the Seabrook portion of the west bank of Galveston Bay...b,121b,121/font1

The story of this place was well known to the people of Seabrook who lived there at the time. I lived near the List Mansion for many years. Several acres of land were bought by a Houston business owner in the late 70's early 80's right on Galveston Bay near the intersection of Toddville Road and East Meyer Road. Bill List was his name and for the most part at first no one knew who he was, only that their was a major construction project going up near the Bay. b,121b,121Bill List owned a trailer manufacturing business and with the success of his business came great wealth. The mansion was a massive undertaking; built up on several feet of soil, the three-story brick structure dwarfed the modest homes surrounding the property. The brick foundry where Bill was buying the bricks for his mansion was unable to keep up production. Bill just bought the brick foundry so all the bricks made could go into his construction project. b,121b,121Month by month the mansion began to take shape. The stark brick structure was three stories tall, four if you count the massive garage on the ground level. All the windows on every floor featured wrought iron bars. It was divided into two separate sections with a large glassed-in garden and pool. Catwalks on the second floor crossed from the front of the house to the back part. The rooms were arranged into separate apartments with kitchens, bathrooms and living areas. A brick wall from Toddville Road surrounded the entire property. The List Mansion (as it was called) resembled a prison, which was not far from true. b,121b,121When construction was completed, some friends and I were in the Kroger's parking lot in Seabrook when two guys a little older than us invited us to a "big party to celebrate the opening of the List Mansion." We talked to them for a few minutes and they left. We did not go to the party. b,121b,121For years after that you rarely saw anyone coming or going from the mansion, even though several families could live there at the same time and never see each other. The guys we saw at Kroger's that day never showed up anywhere in town. Then one day Bill List was dead, murdered, and the whole story came out in the Daily Citizen, the Bay Area News Paper. b,121b,121b1The List Mansion was built like a prison, not to keep people out but to keep people in. As it turns out Bill List had a preference for younger men and would cruise the alleyways and parts of Houston where runaways would frequent. He would offer them a place to stay and drugs in return for his indulgences for the young men. b,121b,121Bill would keep them drugged and locked in the mansion, providing everything for them but freedom. Some would stay and others would eventually be let go but it was the final group of guys who figured it all out. They decided that Bill List must die, so one day they got a hold of a shotgun and waited for Bill to come home from work. Bill never made it up the stairs from the garage before he was shot and killed. The guys who killed him ransacked the mansion, stole Bills credit cards and car and left. Some were picked up on their way to Canada; others were caught in the Houston area. b,121b,121For years after the death of Bill List, the mansion was up for sale and yet no one would buy it. Caretakers were brought in to maintain the property and eventually a bunch of people who had a rock and roll band rented it for a while. I moved from Seabrook in the early 90's. Eventually, a real estate land developer bought the List Mansion and he tore down the mansion. In its place he built stucco condos with clay tile roofs. There is nothing left of the list mansion except the sorted stories of the long time residents of Seabrook.[/b]b,121b,121b,121h,121

    while at lunch, they had geraldo on the tv reporting and i watched him fall into the water and hit his ear... 01 storm - 00 ducherab,121b,121b,121man i hope Galveston doesn't get fusked up. i had so much fun there when i went [in '98]. it was just me and this fly breezy that lived across from my pops in Bellaire. b,121b,121there was a cool ass surplus store there that i remember.
