What the F?An opening between my legs???I was minding my business looking around for good vintage PSA's that have great old fashioned soundtracks and I shipwrecked on this really really odd educational clip from prob '72 or so for teaching Downs Syndrome kids about the facts of life. I am now crying in a corner. This shit is so weird. I am not down with this.

Lucky you. I didn't stop until "This is a used sanitary pad."

I didn't watch this but the commments in this thread are enough to convince me of the screepiness.

Even more creepy than these things is the fact that someone took the time to record/upload this to Youtube.

I'm always amazed at the schitt people have taken the time to transfer to Youtube.

Folks, this is simply the reality of having a Down's child in the house. These human beings mature like the rest of us, and, like us, need to be taught life lessons. It's even more important to train DD people because of the risk of their abuse at the hands of others.

This is real, Strutters. Deal with it. do your rubbernecking somewhere else.

i don't think it's the down-syndrome that people have a "problem" with watching on that...it's just the context and choice of words.

But it's in the context of speaking to a child in terms they can fathom. Even if the DD girl was 45, she'd need to be spoken to in the same manner. The video was not made for YouTube - it's an instructional film for parents and families of DD children.

I imagine there is no reason you cant refer to that impish little opening between a womans legs as a vagina, even to your down syndrome affected child. If Damien Hirst is debuting some new art between your thighs, then I guess you've got a fair claim to having an Opening Between Your Legs. Otherwise its a creepy thing to say.

I have to agree with that.

I love these lost-and-found type videos that pop up and it's cool that people unearth them and post them...60s sex ed PSAs in general for curio or ironic kitsch value? Sure. Interest in obscure records of special ed students doing soul covers? Of course. Reh Dogg and Eli? I can see (saw) the 15 minutes of humor in that. But this being posted on YT as catnip for ignorant ass people who probably don't know much about the female reproductive cycle themselves? Fuck that

Are you guys being serious? Its not like people are tittering about periods (female reproductive cycles, rather) or making fun of the kid with down syndrome. Its an awkward, somewhat creepy video that suffers from pornography-like production values and terrible, stilted acting. Thats all. Only soulstrutters would get in a tizzy over this.

Look - she's a developmentally disabled child. Having lived in the same house as one (my Aunt) nearly my entire pre-college life, I can tell you that this is not simply some exercise in censorship or extra-PC terminology; this girl would only understand life as conveyed through the most basic of terms. If your understanding of DD kids is limited to your local grocery store bagger or Chris Burke as Corky, you would naturally have (and I don't mean this in a judgemental way, only as a matter of course) little idea what I'm talking about. Keep in mind - DD folks are affected to varying degrees - some are barely ambulatory and cannot attend school. Some have a vocabulary of less than 100 words. Imagine having to teach the concept of a menstrual cycle to a 9-year-old girl who has the mental capacity of a 4-year old, and you can begin to understand the situation as presented.

If you're looking for "production values" in an instructional health film from the 60s or anything less than "stilted acting" from an (actually) disabled child and actors attempting to explain life processes to her (which involves a certain real amount of awkwardness), then you're either being n??ive or looking in the wrong places for your personal artistic orgasms. I am losing my patience with you.

Because I disagree as to why people find this humorous? Listen - Im pretty sure that no one is sitting here belittling this little girl in the video, or people with down syndrome in general, and that is all I meant by my post. Clearly you think otherwise.

I merely found the Vagina euphemism* mildly humorous, and Electrodes turn of phrase slightly more so. That is all.

And lets leave the personal artistic orgasms to NZShadows blog, where they belong.

I understand where you are coming from - I wouldn't sit here and say nothing in this post if I thought people were being truly disrespectful of the disabled. I just didn't see it that way.

    * and I get that its not even a euphemism. Vagina may not even be in a DD child's vocabulary.

I stumbled upon it so abruptly and I was struck by the infrequently-employed euphemism ???the opening between my legs", rather than simply to teach her the word vagina, particularly when Downs kids are at risk of being taken advantage of. But you bring up a good point about the limited vocabulary.

I don't think that anyone has disrespected the Developmentally Disabled in this thread. Sincerely. I just find it odd that people would even bother to categorize a relatively true-to-life video (albeit extremely dated, as all such instructional films were) as creepy or personally unpleasing. This was not made for the entertainment of anyone; context is very important here. Why would anyone naturally look for enjoyment or satisfaction in a clip like this?

Wait until I upload this video I have of Jaleel White rapping about not being ready for sex.
