keeping it on the relatively inexpensive tip: try astors singles on stax for great sixties group sounds...dynamics lp on cotillion is top-notch...magic tones singles on various detroit labels tend to be nice...wasters and green berets on uni (as mentioned on another thread)...esquires have lots and lots of singles, and i haven't heard a bad one yet...their bunky lp is superb from start to finish, too...isley bros. "all because i love you" on tamla...spinners "sweet thing" on motown"...gazillions more...
And what was the name of that one soul group on Hi? The Modulations?
It was actually
2264 The Masqueraders - Now That I've Found You / Wake Up, Fool
Ha, I like that title - "Wake Up Fool"!
They had some really good singles on Bell in the late sixties.
A few years back, the Chicago Cultural Center hosted a vocal-group tribute show that was hosted by Jerry Butler and featured the El Dorados and the Masqueraders. They tore it up.

Shit. Where was I at that point in history? Probably picking my nose.
This 45 kicks ass. Strong (but in different ways - nice ballad/nice funkier cut) two sider. Is it that hard to turn up? It seems relatively un-Google-able. One of my fave 45s, you're almost the only other person that I've seen mention it.

Yesss. I just found one by them called "Lost Love". Its like the perfect cross section of every soul subgenre I like.
One of the few groups that I bothered to buy a CD of, because I wanted it all and I wanted it now. Unfortunately, I found out it didn't have everything, not even all their Carnival sides, which is what the CD (on Collectables) really is, a Carnival comp. It has 6 tracks by them, but no "Shing-a-Ling USA" ... it does have two completely different songs with the same backing track, though:
Their later single on Black Circle is OK, but IMO their funk single on Rapda, where they rip off the "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?" groove, is a total burner. Easy to find, too.
Never heard any of their other ones though. Just as good? Good but with a different sound? I can't imagine too much being better than "la la.."
I have several singles, plus their last two albums, Tell Me This Is A Dream and Alive & Kicking...both LP's sound like what you'd expect from the group, all falsetto vocals, full string sections, French horn, the whole Philly trick bag.
But you know what is my favorite Delfonics song?
"He Don't Really Love You" on Moon Shot, which wasn't on an album, as far as I know. It should have been comped, at any rate, since I think it was their first hit.

Sounds a ton like Rev. Green, but you know that Willie Mitchell/ Hi sound: good stuff.
And don't sleep on the Chi-Lites' Blue Rock tracks.

I think this would have been around 2001.

Yeah, I'm just that petty right now.
Instantly one of my favorite soul records....Such good songwriting and exquisite arrangements.
why wouldnt they qualify? the delfonics defined the genre

Of course the Impressions ...
And amongst my favorites, the Voices of East Harlem ...
I should also mention these ...
