Um, well, I can tell you that we were doing it over at Waxidermy (with many SS heads involved) a good 6 months to a year before that site came into existence.
In other words, THEY BIT OUR SHIT AND SHOULD BE KILLED.
This "phenomenon" has been around for years. I think one of the first documented examples of it was in a Wax Poetics issue. The thread on Waxidermy.com kind of blew it up bigger, but once again, this is not a "new" thing.
And yeah, sleeveface has been on SS a few times now I think...

That's unfortunate because Sleeveface is getting all sorts of pub. I even saw them get a write up in People magazine.
yeah, i feel like this has been around for a long time. Maybe not a phenomenon before, but I've definitely seen people doing it for awhile, expecially white producers in rap mags. Hide yo face son!
I'm sure people have been doing this for as long as faces have been on record sleeves. That said, the Waxidermy thread made it around to a lot of "normal people" forums. There were several sleeve-face threads after this not related to the book people, and we had a lot of not really hard core record types sending them in when we put up our feature on the blog. This was all like a year and a half ago. It's funny cause a couple people were talking about a book back then and I honestly didn't think it was really that interesting. That said pt.2, some of the ones I've seen lately are pretty advanced.
While I was joking/exaggerating about the Waxidermy bite, what Crink says is true - this particular "sleeveface" site popped up a mere few months after Waxidermy put ours on the front page and it was getting all kinds of random hits and passed around. So, although it has been around FOREVER, there is still something to the idea that this site that is getting the book deal actually DID bite the idea from Waxidermy. Not that anyone cares either way.
In all honesty they stepped up the game. The pictures on there were very advanced. People picked specific wardrobes to match, probably spent way too much time lining it up.
There is a feature in the new People Magazine on sleeveface.
I'm gonna have to be a hatteur.
I am glad I'm not the only one up on gossip rags.
In all seriousness, sure the whole take a picture with an album cover has been around forever, but for whatever reason, it seems this whole phenomenom is gaining a lot of momentum and capturing the public's imagination. Yeah, people are taking it to new levels. HCrink is this you?
i invented crotchface. i better not see this pop up on the front page of waxidermy!

I'm impressed.
I agree. Though they probably also have the unfair advantage of actually having loved ones who help snap the pictures, etc., whereas Waxidermy people are generally alone in dank apartments with only their cats and 3 years of piled up recycling to love them.

Already done did that.
I believe we've also been exposed to Fatback's "silver apples".
