Saturday night I went to a party thrown by sometime-Strutter Secondlinesocial that was well worth praising. It was held at the Red Scoot Inn (Austin, TX) and featured the Hot 8 Brass Band from New Orleans kicking up much dust. I wish the deejayed set pre-show would've been a little more Mardi Gras oriented...basically during Mardi Gras time in NOLA, it's quite acceptable as the norm for about 7 different Mardi Gras staples to be played over and over and over again...but it was still a pretty darned good set as it was. And to balance out the dominant hipsteur element, it was a great move to have Gene's set up food in the back...as there's nothing that goes as well with good NOLA music than multiple bowls of righteous gumbo. Tomorrow is Fat Tuesday. While Gene's was unable to get a decent parade organized for Austin this year, they are hosting a crawfish boil which should prove to be the realest deal in town when it to comes to Mardi Gras celebrations. I haven't seen Big Chief Kevin and his Flaming Arrows crew in town as of late, so I'm unsure if there will be Mardi Gras Indians in effect or not...but either way, ya just gotta do something tomorrow to get the ya ya's out. Oh yeah, and here is a link to my myspace blog where I shine some light on the History of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club...http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=282796325&blogID=354523528

get the gat, get the gat

Cool enough song, but far too many in NOLA have gone off to "get the gat" already. There is a shooting everyday on the front page of the Times Picayune, such as today...
