http://www.hsalt.com/My parents used to go here a lot when I was a kid, still living in L.A., but that was ages ago. There was a fish & chips thread on another board and it reminded me of this place. After doing a quick search, I found a number of them have closed in recent years. I have no idea when I'll be in California any time soon, and while I realize there is probably better elsewhere, I'd like to visit this place if any are still around.So... any?

"In this high-paced environment it is hard to maintain a healthy diet. H.Salt is the perfect place for the health-conscious individual. Give our dishes a try and let us know what you think. We are certain that once you taste our fish, you'll come back for more."

I looked there too, but it seems the website hasn't been updated in awhile, and I was hoping for a report from anyone who has seen them in recent weeks/months.

I'm not really a fish and chips person, but I remember as a kid there were a lot of them on Lankershim between the hoity toity North Hollywood arts district and Toluca Lake, near the landmark location with the confusing intersection where all the golf megastore, porn video places and one hour photo shops are/were.

  • I thought there was still one in Gardena, but to be honest with you, I haven't seen it or looked for it either.

  • i believe the one on Hollywood near Vermont (near the fatburger and adjacent to los feliz) is still open.... that place taught me to love malt vinegar

The best fish & chips is at the Cock & Bull pub along Lincoln on the west side.

Followed closely by O'Briens on Wilshire...again, westside.

There's one on Santa Monica next to the El Pollo Loco. H.Salt was the truth in the 70's but fell off over the years.

That's the only one I've ever been to. Does anyone ride for King's Head Pub (2nd and Santa Monica)?

That would be the last time I had them (and if we are to get technical, that would be... 1974/1975 maybe? Yikes.) It was probably one of my first food memories. That, and those strawberry wafer cookies I had when I was at that tiny tots daycare program or whatever it was.

  • I've always wondered why salt and vinegar crisps (potato chips) never took off in America...

  • fyi, there are quite a few southern style fish fry spots along slauson, manchester, and a few on pico too. there's also a lil section of inglewood i like to call "little big easy". its along la brea. many a cajun spot right dere i garontee.

King's Head is decent. Fish & chips isn't their strong suit, mainly for price - $15 for two over-battered pieces. Great beer selection, snaps on the walls of celebs looking drunk/surprised, authentic dishes like shepherd's pie.

Sure! It was pretty slick on the roads last week, so I'm glad you didn't make the venture over the hills
