I'm collaborating with a local artist for a gallery installation that will open sometime next year. The theme will be based around creating an "other-worldly" experience through textiles and the manipulation of sight and sound.. I've never done anything like this before but I'm pretty excited. I've got a few ideas already, but I'm looking for more inspiration.I'll be concentrating mostly on soundscapes and lighting, so I'm mainly interested in projects revolving around light / sound. Can anyone recommend any artists that have done things like this?

    this is really popular in the LA arts scene. well, ok, i dont think im qualified to say so but i sure have seen a lot of this type of stuff and its not like i go to art shows and shit all the time. anyways, i know the big dudes would be viola and hill. start with thems and work forwards, i guess. sounds awesome. good luck

    Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but some interesting ideas still.

    I would suggest going to a book store and looking through recent art mags, there is at least one sound/light installation type thing reviewed in each issue.

    I am more familar with films/projections as opposed to sound/light installations.

    I am more familar with films/projections as opposed to sound/light installations.

    I would definitely be interested in film/projection work as well.. I may be able to rent a few projectors.

    Stars of the Lid did a nice show a few years ago with three projectors playing any number of different nature scenes at a time with different filters on each projector. Some beautiful overlapping of images and colours came through.

    Look into Steve McQueen (not the dead guy) and Shirin Neshat. Their work is amazing imo.

    When it comes to sound and light experimentation, La Monte Young and Mirian Zazeela's Dream House is well worth investigating. La Monte created the sound environment using microtones which change pitch when you move your head around. And Mirian's light environment is supposed to be incredible. I've been meaning to pop in for a minute, actually.

    Yeah, Young and Zazeela are pretty much the originators. The Dream House is a first rate mindfuck--entirely unsettling. I highly recommend going to it if you're in New York, because whatever you think sound art/music is, this eats the most intense of it for breakfast.

    You're probably gonna want to look at surrealism, Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman, maybe System d128, et cetera. Go to a website for a graduate film program. Check their course listings for experimental film courses, check the reading lists for those courses, look at those books.

    Not sure who mentioned Eno, but he's done a lot of stuff that falls under such a heading, perhaps most notably Thursday. It's a 'video painting' with music that sounds like any of his ambient 1-4 albums. Terribly boring.

    Bassie, it's funny that you mentioned Pipilotti Rist because I was just thinking about how annoying I find her. Can you recommend anything?

    I used to do stuff with a slide projector, a drum kit, field recordings, and a drone. Pretty basic, but fun to watch/listen to for 20 or 30 minutes.

    LOL - That doesn't surprise me, she (and her work) definitely has that annoying, over-the-top, wacky artiste quality about it. The first thing I saw by her was "Ever Is Over All", a loop of her walking down the street smashing car windows. I'm not sure if these will necessarily convince you or what you'vr already seen, but "PickelPorno" and "I'm Not a Girl Who Misses Much" are pretty good too. I really like the acidy colours of her work and that it's candy-flavoured but still has something that is off. She did a pretty cute installation a few years ago at PS.1 of her in a tiny tiny screen embedded in the floor where she was yelling to be set free - not sure what it was called, though.

    A hundred co-signs on Bruce Nauman, and though she's not primarily known for her video work, Mona Hatoum has done some great work - including her video of a camera travelling through her insides - from the mouth to the butt and then all over again - which is viewed on a screen in a plate.

    Yeah, all i Know is "Ever is Over All" adn her Times Square installation. The one at Ps.1 sounds cute--good wordage.

    I'm not familiar with Mona Hatoum but i'll check for her.

    Also, definitely check ubu.com, as it is probably the world's greatest resource for avan sound and film/video.
