Sorta strange - it took me till much later in life to realize that I really don't care about lyrics too much at all - content wise that is. So - when I hear a song where I actually like and can identify with the lyrics - I'm pretty taken aback - because it's a real rarity. I mean - I love "Ebonics" - but mainly just because it's rad. So - am I gay if I say that Rocket Man has some of the illest lyrics of any song....ever?

I'll take Lord Byron.
Perhaps too existential for the Soul Strut Garage tune-up mechanic crew, but Why?'s lyrics on the first CLoudded album hit me so hard as a young twenty-something:
the ram's crumbled horn an empty turtle shell/
sunset is an all day process/
sunset is an all day process
Intense. One of the most emotionally jarring songs I've heard.
Charles Mingus, "Moves"
Intense in another way. A love song that's dead serious.
No no no.....like I said - I love Big L - he's in my top three - but I'm talking about goosebumpy sort of "I really connect with that" sorta shit. Like I said - I love Ebonics - but you know - how many of us can really relate to the lyrics in a Big L song? I mean when I was 9 - I wasn't saying "an OX!?! that's what I call a razor blade too!"
And yea...but it's really Bernie.
I need to transcribe them one day: Uptown by Little Eva (written by Carole King)
Obvious ones like Mississippi Goddamn, If There's A Hell Below, Maybe, Inner City Blues, Lou Bond's stuff.
One of my favourite lines ever is from The Ikettes' I'm Blue:
"Every night about two, my love for you comes tumblin down"
And from Collage:
"Wintertime is a razor blade that the devil made to make you pay for the summertime"
And from Every Little Bit Hurts:
"My love is strong for you, I'd do wrong for you"
WORD. Man, I wish someone upped that album - it's one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES.
it was a beautiful day off in the neighborhood
Yellows and greens and blues and browns
and greys and hues that ooze beneath dilapidated wood
Ain't a thing could explain but what pertains
to cocaine & sustaining rain
See summer roll around niggas all about change
then they steady movin them keys like bob james
Coz old man winter's arrived
the temperature dives
November just died
December's alive
thus it ain't no typical ride
just individuals way to bring home the bacon when bacon was all gone
making it our own taking me all wrong
We've all indulged in the bulge of those no-nos
no you ain't solo, there's even lower levels you can go
take sun people put them in the land of snow

Brother J said it all in one rhyme right there
Rakim did something really amazing on "In the Ghetto"--and he did it in typical Rakim "it sounds like I'm not even trying" fashion.
Basically all of "Kissing My Love," "Ain't No Change," and "Give the People".
Tears fall in slivers, you broke my shades
The light too bright, let me bury my heart
Filter emotions of green, cowardice gives blue
A restricted view, let me open my heart
I have a fleeting love
Searching when it lands
Fragile, needing precious hands
Fragile
You eat my energy, give me more rope
Nail in the wall, let me hang my heart
I have a fleeting love
Searching when it lands
Fragile, needing precious hands
Fragile
Kinks "Lola"[/b]
I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola
See-oh-el-aye cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
El-oh-el-aye Lola
Well I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola
Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy won't you come home with me
Well I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola
La-La-La-Lola
I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me
Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
La-La-La-Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
La-La-La-Lola
Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man
Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
