is there a really good stand-alone software compressor out there? im looking for some solid punchy La-2a compression and i dont really have any good compression software on my computer, or anything that really works with plug-insif there is something like this...perhaps somebody can "assist" me in getting this software? thanks dudes, im trying to get excited to work on beats again and this would be a big help.

  • Not really sure about that. Most are in VSTi format. You most likely need a host like ableton, cubase, etc... You use cooledit though right? maybe upgrade to adobe audition so you can use plugins.

well i do have ableton but i dont really use it for much. lets say i have an audio file and i want to run compression on it, can i just load it into abelton and do it there?

does ableton have built-in compression? i know nothing about VST plug-ins. i just wanna know whats really good and get it so i can finally get some decent compression when im recording drums and so-forth.

you should be able to find Waves DX plugins, and I know there are some DX-VST converters also.. DX is what cooledit uses, its like vst before vst got big..

now unlike more modern programs where you can adjust as you go along, with cooledit you will have to "apply" the settings of the plugin to your auido file then if you dont like it, you will "undo" and try again, it really a pain in the ass..

all that a side, the waves C1 is damn decent

your a better man then me, I was so happy to be rid of that shit.. moved to cubase and its like night and day... anyway...

I got my waves off of soulseek, there are also a ton of sites http://www.kvraudio.com (you can search for DX plugs)

or just drop "free dx plugins" in google

there is one dude who used to use cooledit an awful lot, he had a ton of shit.. check your pms

  • yes ableton has a full plugin suite, with 2 kinds of compressors. I use them alot actually for drums and other samples. You also can just render an audio file in there to be used in another host or whatever.

i've been using the psp wintage warmer, don't think it can be used with cool edit though

  • ako,
with your setup it sounds like you should just check out Audacity and do your compression in there.

it's a stand alone sequencer, and real raw, basic daw. but i believe it has some pretty good (enough to get the job done) dynamic processors in it.

nothing like a real outboard compressor like a la2a, but just try it out, might be helpful.

best thing is, it's already free.

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

    ez.

    kg.

though, with a little more research, i'm sure you can 'purchase' the waves bundle and use it in conjunction with ableton. that will give you the best sound processing for an 'in the box' setup.

  • I would suggest trying to find a version of the waves plugins, The C1 plugin is a good compressor, and if you can find the renaissance pack, the compressor in there is probably more of what you are looking for, a much warmer punchier sound than the c1... but it saps so much cpu power I can't use it on my current set up. And I am not sure if it was ever released as a DX plugin.
