Who knows about the spots that are not serving sushi and teriyaki? I want a mean egg don, and I want to know where to get it. While I'm on the subject of food, does anyone know any good Ital restaurants?

we had a record show a couple times at a holiday inn on broadway & the 30's,
it was in a 4-6 block neighborhood that has all you seek

you might want to check out Sakagura on east 43rd. i believe between 2nd and 3rd Ave. there's no sign outside. you have to just go into the building and take the elevator down to the basement.

  • That joint on Saint Mark's with the raccoon statue in front. Always packed at like 1 in the morning, and BULL PENIS is right on top of the specials menu.

    tskushi - $40 set meals
    yakitori totto
aburiya kinnosuke - yakitori totto spin-off
    rockmeisha izakaya

    ramen...

    minca
    setagaya
santoka - well it's nj (mitsuwa), but it's better than anything in nyc.

rip to chikubu, say no to momofuku.

the broth is really really heavy, I don't think there's much msg in it. It's just the layers and layers of fat in it that gets to people. I don't recommend going in the summer.

Try setagaya, it's a new chain from Japan that recently opened.

Agreed, although I am not certain of the actual content, it might've just been very high in sodium. I know that familiar sting and subsequent headache though... my girl felt the same effects

if you do try setagaya, let me know what you think since I haven't been yet. Their specialty is shio (salt), which has a much lighter/less oily broth than Minca's.

It is popular w/ the ladies in Japan for health reasons.

Is there anything in NY similar to the Japanese tapas places they have in Vancouver?

  • If you want some high quality katsu... Katsuhama on 47th is the place.

    here

do you remember the name of the place you went to in Van?

Best bet is to check out a few izakayas. Izakayas serve quinessentially Japanese bar food, the requisite hangout for salarymen post work. They offer lots of small dishes. A few that comes to mind are....

    Rockmeisha - west village
Kenka - st marks (avg food, but $1.50 kirin)
    Kasadela - 11th & ave c
    gyu kaku - midtown
    riki - midtown (excellent)
the two yakitori places I mentioned = various chicken parts on skewers.

More pics of setagaya, with menu shots.

    itadakimasu!
