You are far too rational and fair-minded to have
racked up over 5000 posts on Soul Strut, A************h

Congrats to one of my all time favorite Strutters,
looking forward to the next 5G!

  • Woohoo! The Strut wouldn't be the same without ya! Hope all is well,

    love

Rather than demand a mix of you, in the typical tradition of such a milestone, could we all make a mix for you to celebrate your contributions, your even keel, your beautiful sense of taste and humor and your vigilance in keeping things sincere?

    You make this place.

Oh E***, thank you for saying such nice things.

I wish I could do a mix every week but I'm still living in the stone age with no computer, so...but I really think I should make another one. I will try to get it together before 5500.

No dude, I was being literal. Like, this STUDIO CARPET celebration should be of the variety where we make mixes for you. I just made this:

    ALONE WITH THE OWL[/b]

22 songs as a vehicle in honoring your ongoing presence in this solitary wailhouse (a super tight mix this is not).

UT - "Wailhouse" (Blast First, 1989)
Ramblin' Jack Elliott - "Nightherding Song" (Reprise, 1967)
Matt Bauer - "Carve It Out" (Crossbill Records, 2006)
Shellac - "Billiard Player Song" (Bootleg, 2004)
Mingering Mike - "She's Back" (Fake Records, 1968)
Kris Kristofferson - "Late Again" (Monument, 1974)
Susan Sontag reading "Debriefing" (Tanam Press, 1974)
Judith & Holofernes - "From the Bottom of the Well" (2006)
Lotti Golden - "Get Together (With Yourself)" (Atlantic, 1969)
Unwound - "Sensible" (Kill Rock Stars, 1996)
Live Skull - "Pusherman" (Homestead, 1986)
    Discussion with Henry Miller
Kenny Sargent - "Girl of My Dreams" (Decca, 1939)
Excerpt from the Diary of Ana??s Nin LP
Steven Jesse Bernstein - "Dancin' to the Radio" (self-released)
Charlie Smalls - "Never Felt Like This Before" (Columbia, 1968)
    William Basinski - "Melancholia" (self-released, 2003)
The Perfect Human - "There is No More Sound" (Denmark)
Shannon Wright - "Portray" (Touch and Go, 2004)
The Grails - "Burden of Hope" (Neurot Recordings, 2003)
Glenn Gould - "Idea of North" (CBC, 1969)
Jason Molina - "Alone with the Owl" (Secretly Canadian, 2006)

    • Notes on the songs and on bassie and on things between
    • Songs With Repetitious Themes. (Echolocation, batshit!)
    • Here is a place where non-conformists can live
    • Themes include: Owls, Canada, Loneliness, Love, Memory, Hermits
    • "Sweet are the uses of adversity"
    • At least the past is safe, though we didn't know it at the time, we know it now, because it's in the past.
    • When I lived, was I anything at all?
    • Try to lead an exemplary life.
    • Poor sound quality, singing off key, noise, and phrases like "I'll eat fuck-all wrapped in nothing" don't stop a song from fully kicking ass.
    • A hermit by choice v. A hermit by necessity (are you answering a challenge or escaping from yourself?)
    • Soulstrut or cattle: Liable to stampede at the slightest provocation
    • YOUR FAVORITE SOULSTRUT SUPERMODEL
    • "Ask yourself if you could do better?"

For cash or cashmere, it's yours. I like these songs more than all the others because they speak directly to the things noted above. They are not like those other songs in my collection today, in that they haven't sugarcoated their bittersweet fruits of pristine originality in order to please the jaded palates of their patrons. They haven't added water to their wine. The aren't making themselves heard only in undertones. They don't prepare the words they cry out. They speak according to the madness that has seduced them. They curse like billiard players and throw their stick upon the ground. Their heart is a nail sticking from a board; they find a hammer to pound it down, they find a knife to carve it out.

The moon was like a lemon, and the stars were sharp as ice

"It's a frame of mind and a comfortable chair
It's people who've been through what you've been through
You can call it a club, but it's not
    I cannot possibly describe..."
