Disclaimer: This is just my opinion

I prefer my guitar players to play with "soul" and feeling.

In my opinion Eddie Van Halen was responsible for taking "soul less" guitar playing to the next level.

Technical to a fault and sterile to my ears.

He spawned a whole list of technically adept but excruciatingly boring players like Steve Vai, Satriani, etc.

I'd rather listen to Willie Joe and his Unitar(one stringed guitar) than Eddie Van Halen any day.

Prog rock initiated the slow death of the electric guitar in rock and roll and Van Halen drove the last nail into it's coffin.

classic Van Halen (David Lee era) is some of the greatest rock music ever made...not souless at all.

Would that be a testament to David's strong vocals moreso than Van Halen's virtuosity?

I was a fan.......bought the first LP and it was probably the one LP that I turned my younger brother on to that got him into music....he now runs a Metal label.

But now 20+ years later I can't listen to any of their stuff....Roth or Hagar.

It's worn so thin on me that I cringe when just about any of their tunes come on.

It was new and fresh in it's day, no doubt........now to my ears, it's all crap.

jamie's cryin yes. little dreamer yes. somebody get me a doctor yes.

i heartily endorse michael anthony's backing vocals and i don't think eddie v is sterile on the early vh albums. it sounds like he's having fun while showing off as opposed to old Slowhand. clapton is so dull; he's the real enemy

He's no Yngwie Malmsteen. Dude was the Kenneth Eng of the Swedish classically-influenced shredding scene.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but...I'd like to hear that.

And Batmon: HELL NO to that Satriani. You'd be better off with a copy of Steve Vai "Flexible."

Wow, I can't believe I said that, either.
