see me there.
I think the more basic the better, and have found that everything one needs to know is in this book:
If it's in print and worth hollering at, it's for sale here:

Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst
There's one by Adrian Frutiger called something like Sign symbol type, but it's out of print.
Stop Stealing Sheep by Erik Spiekermann
best new screen name since Punani Prince.
Triumvirate
The three essential books that should be the basis of every type designer???s/typographer???s library - one of the few things that Hrant Papazian and Thomas Phinney ever agreed on:
The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst
Anatomy of a Typeface by Alexander Lawson
Letters of Credit by Walter Tracy
This book is great.
DCastillo beat me to the type books in my special shelf but this one...
it's under logo art but, needless to say, it's GRRREAT. nice piece of furniture too!
a.) LOGO ART by Kohei Miura
i think you can get one on ebay or amazon. it's real nice stuff.
b.) I also think The New TYPOGRAPHY by Jan Tschichold is essential reading material for anyone into typography. I had to read it for school a five years ago but I don't think it's too much outdated.
c.) not as essential but this book WEBtype? I don't have it by my side but you can google the author I'm sure. The book has a whole assortment of typographic styles compiled.(mainly for web use) I don't see how it can not help a print based artist.
