i would tend to agree with you, but i believe the term as i see it used is when a white person''s critique of a racist incident/issue is used to somehow exonerate or differentiate that white person from other white people.
example (as actually seen on other boards) white dude: you (other white dudes) should feel ashamed of the current state of recovery in the gulf coast. i've been down there, i know how it is, you folks have already forgotten...etc.
while the critique in itself may be very legitimate, when it is used in this manner, so as to separate said white person from all other people it seems improper, hypocritical and possibly based out of some form of 'white guilt' as defined by odub.
