    Ed,

White Guilt = Whites going out of their way to be uber-PC because they feel bad about slavery and the legacies of racism since then.

The phrase gets used as a way of critiquing policies that seem based less on rational social/political considerations and more on a knee-jerk reaction NOT to want to seem racist.

    Perfect

    No, not perfect.

    That's the theoretical meaning.

But I don't believe I've ever seen/heard it used except by some ass-hurt white person grasping for reasons to ignore a critique of racism.

You obviously don't hang out on SS very much.

Oh yeah, I agree. I think "White Guilt" is some red herring that gets thrown out by White people to attack racially sensitive policies by other White people. It's a purely reactionary concept.

I think it might be "real" in certain contexts but I hardly think it's some incredible factor in contemporary political policy.

I've rarely met that many guilty White people. They tend to hang onto their privilege with glee (which is what privilege is meant to engender).

Yeah, that's what I'm saying--it's a strawman, much like "political correctness," and because it is so tainted, I am suspicious of anybody that uses it.

White guilt is overrating a Jay-Z cd.

And I know this, because I've done it.

    Political Correctness = Sham

    White Guilt = Sham

    Body Odor = Sham

But they all have one thing in common.

    cool ...just checking

i hear this term thrown around often and say to myself.... they cant be serious with this bullshit......but it is now confirmed .....people have lost their damn minds if they think "white guilt" is even possible.

    another joke.

Here's an excellent takedown of Whitlock's recent comments on the Duke Lacrosse team incident.

I was never a fan of Whitlock, but all the attention he's gotten lately seems to have caused him to completely unravel:

...if this had been black players at Georgetown versus two white escorts, would anyone have believed that story?

    Unbelievable.

i would tend to agree with you, but i believe the term as i see it used is when a white person''s critique of a racist incident/issue is used to somehow exonerate or differentiate that white person from other white people.

example (as actually seen on other boards)
white dude: you (other white dudes) should feel ashamed of the current state of recovery in the gulf coast. i've been down there, i know how it is, you folks have already forgotten...etc.

while the critique in itself may be very legitimate, when it is used in this manner, so as to separate said white person from all other people it seems improper, hypocritical and possibly based out of some form of 'white guilt' as defined by odub.

E, it's Jason Whitlock--this is what he now traffics in.

Here it is in context, and the meaning remains the same:

have we had an hour long press conference putting these people up on a cross yet... they faced rape charges for a year based on the word of two people with no credibility. And, Jesse Jackson went down there and called people out and offered this woman a scholarship when anybody with a brain, any grown man over 21 with a brain, I mean come on, you???re talking about college kids versus escorts???come on, if this had been black players at Georgetown versus two white escorts, would anyone have believed that story... it was terribly easy to call this... has jesse offered them an apology..."

And, for the record, Jesse has not been in NC at any point since the accusations surfaced.

The most obvious example of white guilt I ever witnessed in real life(as opposed to the internet) were all those Long Island white girls that would never ever actually hook up with a black dude, but made it a point to sidle up to every one they saw to let them know they "understood and sympathized with the plight of the black man".

The black guys that hung out at the club I worked at had a name for them that I will not repeat.

    This is ridiculous.....

Just as many ignorant people that had the Duke players convicted and in jail from the outset would have thought the Georgetown players were guilty and deserved the book thrown at them.

It would have just been different ignorant people.
