I asked Dr. Smith about the title in an interview once, and I believe he said it was an honorary degree, but he sticks to it to differentiate from the other Lonnie Smith.

Dr. Dollar Bin, Ph.D. (really)
Prove it - let's see your turban.
Those pics are "eyes only" for those of us who have entered the secret Doctor of Philosophy fraternity. I can say that I had to sit through a rambling 45 minute speech from Starsky at my med school graduation. He's the Honorary Chair of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS foundation and has a lot to say, but he could use an editor.
Two long workouts from a live album from 2003 called "Hammond Rens" that the good doctor recorded here in Copenhagen with local jazz wunderkind Kresten Osgood. These recordings are pretty hot IMO. L. Smith has still got "it", and Osgood backs him up with some seriously funky drumming (one the one yeeaaaaoow).
A recent "favorite concerts" thread on waxidermy where SoulOnIce mentioned a Lonnie Smith concert made me pull this out again. Thought someone might enjoy it.
pretty sure herbie han has an honorol doctor degree too
He's probably got a lot of them; I think he received his first one ~35 years ago. They don't mean a whole lot other than that some institution wanted you to show up for their commencement. At this point, I'm sure lots of rock dudes have received them as well.

Nothing; I believe his title is self-bestowed.

Donald Byrd has a real one, though.
Yusef Lateef too.
