So I quit my job recently, and I am looking for a new gig within the music industry again whether in the digital world or some sort music supervisor situation for a clothing company. Anyone got any tips or leads for a fellow soulstrutter??!!Amir

music supervisor situation for a clothing company

    what would this job entail??

  • for example, programing the music played in all Urban Outfitters or the new guys on the block: Uniglo from Japan. Like the Ecko stores have someone that programs the music for all the stores. that's something interests me now.

ah, that is one of the more specialized fields I've heard of.

maybe you can start a new niche and do something about what they play at supermarkets

    Uniqlo makes nice clothes.

  • hahahaha...na no supermarkets for me! programing music for Pathmark or Whole Foods..lol! Also wouldn't music supervising for commericals and movies tho.

holy shit! i went into Whole Foods for the first time a couple of weeks ago - what a RIP OFF.

for music supervision for commericals and movies, the more you know about clearances/rights/publishing/etc., the better - and I imagine you know a little about those things haha

  • what about music for fashion shows? some of that lot like to get their wig on

oh my gawd - if anyone knows alexander mcqueen - tell him i will do the music for his shows for free.

  • I've had a long-running dream to program an airplane radio show. I've found some surprisingly decent playlists on random flights before. One was hosted by Bootsy.

Friend of mine did music for Appalling Apparel and got paid very little. Doubt any of those gigs can pay too much.

The loot is in soundtracks and hollywood music supervision. You can make 50g on one good placement. Course, you need to be connected... but I'm guessing you got a pretty fat rolodex.

  • word that could be the move too

  • You quit Fat Beats?

My ass is about to apply!

j/k - I know you'll be straight on the job tip, scoring a film or being a music director for a company would be

You live in NY right? Go hang out in the East Village, i'm sure there's a couple of NYU kids running around with a large budget trying to film thier masterpeice or whatever... Holler @ Paycheck, he prob has all sorts those art kids in his store on the daily blowing the advance money on cocaine & raer private psych garage LPs.

  • I quit fat beats two years ago..lol! So you are lil' too late. I quit ABB Records...looking for a new gig. I am still looking to get back into the industry tho.

    dude holler at spike lee.

    spike@40acresandamule.com (sike)

but you really should. i saw him at a barnes and noble on 5th avenue once. he was kind of a dick.

  • I read an article in the new yorker a year or so ago, and most music programmed into stores is done by subscription (a la and via satellite) through....

    wait for it....

    the Muzak corp.

They realized that elevator muzak was too limited, so they make most of the CDs and program most of the sattelite stations that stores play.
Look into it; was a pretty interesting company/article. It valued the ability to blend songs (not beat match, but selection, etc.) as well as broad musical knowledge. Believe it said that many folks were in their offices in North Carolina, but some worked at outside spots.

This all based on a New Yorker profile of the company...but, if you'rs serious, it is worth looking into.

some top supervisors get that much for selecting and clearing music for an entire movie but even that is rare nowadays. it used to be supervisors would get close to 6 figures per picture but no more.

amir, if you want to supervise for commercials... advertising agencies will either do it themselves or source it out to a supervision company or independent supervisor that'll do it for them. so in short, if you know any advertising contacts, getting in touch with them would be a good start.

    Amir,,

I am kind of knee deep in doing this and clothing retail tends to be a suck suck situation. i love it and hate it at the same time.

i can drop some interesting companies to you on a PM if you are interested. not sure of any NY companies, but there are some around... and NY got half the record industry on lock if not more...

  • Yo, please hit me off with any info...it would be greatly appreciated!!!

This thread is mad interesting. I collect records, make beats, rock that streetwear and I???m generally into shit (just like many other the people on soulstrut). I just moved to New York and I???m trying to find some type of job that I actually like. I have a corporate ass job that pays decently and I???m appreciative that I can support myself, but I don???t really find it appealing or interesting. Its just the responsible thing to do for me to stay in this career because I got bills to pay. I really dream of making beats all day and I came to New York to get on.

It seems like many of the dudes on this board have all these sick jobs dealing with music. Is it because everyone has had some success from DJing, digging or making beats? How did everyone get in the position to do what they want to do?

    Help a brother out!

It isn't what you know- it's who you know... In any sort of entertainment industry that is the mantra you should live by. don't burn bridges. keep arms difference to alot of people. have a good database of people you meet. do favors for people you dont care to, but can do things for you in the future.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. Networking seems like the right thing to do in this game. I???ve met a lot of people around town so far. I just have to keep meeting people and stay focused on my music.

I love being in New York because anything can happen and everyone is trying to do something unconventional. I remember talking to this kid at a record store and about my job and he seemed to want career advice. I told him about university, job experience and all that other bullshit, then I told him that we???re in New York. Go be an movie star, DJ, writer, porno star, graph artist or musician. Forget trying to get ???real??? 9-5 and trying to be an adult. It???s overrated man.

Good luck mayne. The corporate 9-5 gig is not all bad. My medical, dental and vision, paid sick days, paid vacation and paid holidays are not that overrated. I like being on a schedule, getting a nice check every two weeks and walking to work.

Music for ads is where it's at - get in touch with some ad agencies. You've got the skills and the name so get in there.
Not sure about the situation in the US but in the UK retail music gigs normally go to the larger licensing companies. Obviously, it's not just about tune selection but copyright and tracking across a large number of tracks over a 6/12 month period. The retailers generally want the whole managed package so nice tunes alone will not always cut it without a tracking and distribution model behind them.

Another interesting development at the moment is the Napsters and iTunes of this world starting to get name DJs to put together playlists for download - kind of best of breed selections across various genres.

    funkyexample...are you on waxidermy too?

I was going to mention that there was someone over there that was speaking about Music Supervision in a thread a little while back, but what you are saying sounds similar.

If not I'll try to search for a link to the thread because it's got that 'generally interested in shit' location/relevance vibe.
