Hey,As you know, hip-hop tracks have various elements forming the beat. I'm curious as to who you guys like the most for each area such as beat (or drum programming), basslines, loops/melodies, horns, hooks, arrangements, and miscellaneous (to be named at the poster's discretion). I'll start it off:Beat/Drum Programming: Large Professor.Basslines: Pete Rock.Loops/Melodies: A Tribe Called Quest.Horns: DJ Mark the 45 King.Hooks: DJ Premiere.Arrangements: J-Dilla.Miscellaneous (Movement/transitions in tracks): Beastie Boys/Mario Caldato.Peace,Big Stacks from Kakalak

prefer dilla beats!
i hear you on the filtered pete rock basslines. the sickest!! hi-tek pretty good also.
horns, hmm, i think chocolate boy wonder wins again, if only for "shut em down" remix..
hooks, yeah deffo preeemo.
On the horns, it was a toss-up between 45 King and Pete Rock. I gave it to Mark because he was first to be known for the horns. He influenced my horn sampling, so I big-upped him.
Peace,

I know but some of these guys do drastically different shit so I wanted to aknowledge the different styles. The Loop/Melody part is hella dificult because part of me wants to go with battlecat, dj quik etc. because they brought the real musicianship on the beats whereas Dilla, Primo and guys in that genre have the coldest ear for finding loops.
who wins the snare category?

Yo Haze,
Beat was my toughest category. I passed on Tribe (believe me I loooooove their drums) because I picked 'em for another category. Plus, Extra P had those extra crispy joints too (along with Diamond, Buckwild, Showbiz, Hi-Tek, Muggs, Beatminerz, Beatnuts, Havoc, Marley Marl).
Peace,
