Best balance between file size and sonic qualtiy is AAC. However mp3 is the most standard format and works on macrowave. No lossless or aac support for it.
lossless is cool if you have tons of harddrive space. I roll with 192kbps .mp3's at 24bit. They sound good at that rate. Anything less you suffer loss of harmonics and low end and gain distortion/noise and subtle jitter. Anything higher you start eating into HD space.

if you want to preserve maximum quality go lossless. the size is bigger though. otherwise id go with mp3. ripped at 256kbps.
