I set up a show for him in Montreal about two years ago. He did a set with some local jazz players, which consisted of about 25% playing music and 75% crazy rants about his life, language and playing the pipies, all mixed in with his unique brand of American Patriotism. This on St Jean Baptiste day, the patriotic holiday of Quebec!
Then, my Moog rock trio, The Unireverse, played a set, capped off with a collaboration with Rufus, doing a version of "Malika".
Doing that tune with Rufus was definitely the highlight of my musical life!
I regret that I had so many opportunities to see him play and I never showed up... This is the first R.I.P. post that has really hit me hard... I loved his worked... The Bible however promises a resurrection.
i have up on my wall the autographed picture he sent me a long time ago when i was trying to get him some gigs. "to brother Aaron...peace and Love...Rufus Harley"

Whether you liked it or not, the fellow did what he wanted to do.
Hats off.
I truly heart his appearance on this record:
Best picture I could find. The Wailing Dervishes. Herbie Mann.
I just love how well his bagpipes fit into to the middle eastern groove on that date.
