Moog records are a dime a dozen. Most of the material is inconsistent and downright cheesy. But, there are tons of dope moog records out there that we just don't know about. Enter: Gil Trythall- Nashville Gold-Switched on Moog...I picked up this LP for free at a friends yard sale. I read the cover and thought it was wack. Moog covers of traditional country songs. Needless to say, I was blown away by some of the music on here. There are two tracks which I wouldn't even bother with. The rest is dope. No joke. Soulful country tunes with moog and orchestral arrangements. A good dig.Anybody have a similar situation?

you really think so? i have two of his country moog lp's and personally they are incredibly cheesy. mosreso than half the "appreciated" moog lps.
some favorites though:
Moog Groove - great record, and 3 even greaterbreaks to boot.
Swithced-On Rock - maybe cheesy? but theres a few tracks on here i really really like.
Moog Indigo - obvious.
Music to Moog By - another obvious.
i know theres more i like. i recall the country ones having a few sample-worthy moments, but aside from that they really werent my cup of tea (maybe just the fact that unlike most other moog lps of the era, they actually used synthesized drums instead of live ones...)
no offense or anything, just sayin theres muuuuch better lps out there.
BTW, I was shocked to learn that Walter Carlos of Switched-On Bach fame was a tranvestite, even when "she" recorded her first moog LP. Funny that she first revealed her secret to Playboy in 1979. But seriously, plenty of moog records have great moments - that Claude Denjean with the whistling Aphex Twin sample, the Moog ROck LP with the Beastie's "Get it Together" loop... I find even the common moog LPs have something unique about them...

my favorite
well, ones got a rising synth note over it, but "feelin alright", "rock me", and "grazing in the grass"
The Claude De Jean with the lips is kinda cool. Most of his stuff has cool moments though it's never face melt stuff.
The Copper Plated Circut was one that kinda of let me down.
I recently found a Moog Does the Blues one and it was pretty cool for a Moog LP.
A lot of the problem with Moog LP's is that the Moog was such a big deal that people just used it on LP's and so it's pretty crazy souding stuff. At the time people were all about "you can make the Moog sound like a whole band". The better records are the ones that actually have a band.
As far as Wendy Carlos goes that's no big deal to me. If you see pictures of Walter he never looks happy and when you see pics of Wendy she always has a smile, so more power to her. The trasvestite thing is pretty standard for people who end up getting a sex change. They feel trapped in the wrong body so they dress how they feel.
yeah, the only track even remotely ok was "wheres prince brilliant", but overall i wouldnt spend more than a dollar the second time around...

That is true!
(1) The Delta Merchant's SWITCHED-ON BLUES on Excello? (Down-home blues on a synth.)
(2) The Zeet Band's MOOGIE WOOGIE on Chess? (Michael Bloomfield, Donny Hathaway, and other sessionmen doing the Moog thing.)
This is another one that was kinda of a let down. With that label and those players I was expecting more.

Dick Hyman = Piano virtuoso, moog, electric organ, harpsichord. EZ listening and jazz.
Richard Hayman = Piano virtuoso, harmonica, composer and conductor. EZ listening and classic.
The follow-up to In Sound from Way Out, I'm definitely diggin' it, although I'm not expecting any "monster braeks" or anything...nice moody version of "Umbrellas of Cherbourg," and the price was right, $4 for a clean copy.

It's not listed on that link supplied above, but I've seen it pictured on Excello/Nashboro inner sleeves. I believe there's a listing for it on the Both Sides Now website, which has album discographies for a bunch of different labels, including Excello.

Not a moog concept album per se, but just as "moogy" as the average Wendy Carlos album and a whoooole lot doper!!!
Niemen Aerolit is a sureshot in general. "Id??e Fixe" is heavy on the moog as well:

My Niemen collection is missing that other double album he did, but I'm hoping to trade it with Woody soon. And if you ever get a spare of that John Murtaugh thang, count me in on a trade on that one as well.
