Punjabi-based/originated dance-inflected music? Mos def - when I was travelling through India last year, it was bewildering going into record stores and trying to surmise what was what - going to Mumbai meant you'd encounter different artists (and a different language) than those in a place like Kochin (in Kerala) or Madras (in Tamil Nadu), let alone Kalkata (or in a prior incarnation Calcutta) in West Bengal... Way too many choices and not enough information/foreknowledge...
It's taken off over the last few years in Seattle... definitely a handful of hot, well-attended desi nights out here. The only annoying thing is that in the last six months a couple of the bigger DJs have switched from bhangra and dancehall to godawful Bollywood epic house. Bring the drums back!
I spin bhangra twice a month here in North Carolina. What you need to know hommie

Wow. I was at that Sharon Jones show. That situation makes infinitely more sense now. Were you the Dj spinning before the show?
Yep, that was me and my co-DJ Midnite Cowbwoy. Between the two of us, we spin soul/funk (both of us) and bhangra/bollywood (just me) somewhere in the triangle just about every week.
The two Punjabis are my friends Gagan & Montek. I told them about the show earlier in the week, they showed up and really enjoyed it (obviously!).

I like it.
Killer show - they're definitely the dons of the game. Luckily game recognize game. And more importantly game visits game.
