I really don't think that, even with bipartisan support and a presidential sign off, this would hold up in court... perhaps the JRoots and Faux_Rillzes and DrBrownsCelrays of the world can set me skraight?
I'd venture to say this is more about controlling information than profit. Although corporations have much to gain, the government, I think, wants to get a hold of and control the information running rampant via the interweb. Before people start throwing lizard speak at me, think about this:
The internet is honestly the last bastion of free information the public has. If you take away all the various news sources, blogs, and random banter between people, we are left with essentially 5 different companies all telling us the same thing (Disney, Time Warner, Viacom, News Corps, etc.). I don't know about you, but that sounds pretty dangerous (and Orwellian) to me.
Again, I cannot recommend this book highly enough:
I've bee reading it the last few days and while it's , it doesn't give much hope of a free press. I know, I know, there is no such thing, but when you have reputable journalists with extensive resumes and accolades sacrificing their careers, life savings, families and more or less sanity, just to expose the truth, you have to give it some merit. They cover everything from Monsanto/Growth Hormone cover-ups to the "Drug War", to the current war and then some. Highly recommended [/ttlab].
Just read this story and thought of this recent thread......If this actually happens it will force all of these companies to take total control of what their users do.
I hope this doesn't become a trend that winds up as "Abuse Freedom, Lose Freedom"
