This spring we are proud to present the hanon 'Northern Sole' series - a forthcoming collaborative project with New Balance.
The hanon x New Balance 'Northern Sole' footwear series pays homage to those early rare & obscure soul 45s that were pressed in short runs and became integral to the Northern Soul scene that flourished in English club venues such as Wigan Casino and the Torch club in the 60s and 70s. Each shoe is manufactured in Flimby, Cumbria, in similar short edition runs of 120 pairs as our tribute to the energy and excitement that the Northern Soul fans invested in their culture.
Just like the patches that the Soul boys would collect from the Clubs they visited, each style will come with its own unique ???Club??? badge set to collect.
hanon???s Northern theme is also a tribute to the massive influence that the Northwest of Britain has had within trainer culture generally, a legacy that spread from the 1970s football terraces to the Madchester era of The Hacienda and on to the present day.
Our roll out will start on the 28th of April and will consist of one edition of Northern Sole?? trainers, 1 x club badge set and a Brian Sweeney portrait limited edition postcard as featured in the campaign. The postcards will be hand numbered and unique to each edition. There will be a total of 4 models released each in a strict edition of 120 pairs.
Dudes had some great foot work. I have always wondered what Wigan looked like, seems like a nice atmosphere.
The initial sequence looked like an 'Antiques Roadshow'-type of program... And despite the amount of flak that Northern Soul catches (including on SS), the scene gets my respect for foraging way further than the spoonfed 'Big Chill' Motown soundtrack that North American audiences (of that particular era) know from heavy rotation radio play - is anyone gonna disparage that Frank Wilson joint? Kudos to the UK audience for providing a base of support for reissue labels like Ace (and thanks to Drewn for that 'Impressed!' set - which, if I'm not mistaken, is on the Ace subsidiary Kent)...
The Frank Wilson 45 was only originally pressed as a demo for Motown executives. The reason he knows that the Motown offices don't even have a copy is that their file copy was allegedly lifted and sold by an internal source for thousands of pounds. In early 1980s, the 45 was finally "issued" by Motown, although I think it was possibly issued only in the UK. I can't remember the exact details. While it is considered a "repro" and not an original, even this issue has attained some value.

Hey Rob, is that the record that got a bit of magazine coverage a couple years ago for selling for some insane amount, thousands & thousands of US$. I remember reading & thinking I could buy a couple of cars for that amount... Maybe it was in Record Collector mag??
I'm sure I recall reading in either RC or perhaps even a newspaper that a guy in the UK had paid ??25,000 for a Northern Soul 45. This might have been late 90's.

Toronto heads will recognize Kop's Kollectibles as the retail franchise... My understanding is that Burrell's copy was purchased from Tim Brown, Kev Roberts's partner in Goldmine/Soul (and prior owner to Brown) whereas Koppel's disc was sourced from Ron Murphy - it was Motown historian Tom Dieperro who sold the copy (which had been given to him ostensibly for research purposes) that eventually landed in Burrell's collection...

that was Scottish DJ/collector Kenny Burrell in the video - he bought Matin Koppels copy for the price he mentioned.
