I don't know if other people have turned these up, but I figured a least a few of you havn't seen them. I have a ton of video I am going thru now, but here is a clip of Stark Reality. Its from the Say Brother television show, of which they were the house band. The end with the promo for the 45? Link to the video:http://www.galacticfractures.com/starkreality.wmvLike I said, if this is old news, I apologize. But, I definately hadn't seen this footage.-peeJ

oh really? I don't have that.....I have the raw Say Brother shows. What else is on the dvd? Do they have the other performances of the bands? The Parliments doing "Testify" is amaaaaaaaazing. And so far, the Chambers Brothers blew my mind too.

    (tracked down the dvd tracklisting)

They must have just put the one performance of Stark Reality. I have several of the Say Brother videos. There might be other Stark Reality footage that isn't on the dvd, i am not sure as I havn't seen the Stones Throw thing. HOWEVER, the promo for the 45 at the end of the clip i posted is crazy.

Plus, I'll post up the Parliments "Testify" performance that is facemelting. (converting it now).

(edit: posted this at the same time as above)

So, you have access to the Say Brother archives??

This is through your girlfriend who you said works
    at WG*H?

    Crazy.

I used to watch "Say Brother" sometimes when I was a little kid
    in the mid-70's.

If you can hook up the entire 1st anniversary Parliament show
at some point that would be the shit!

Ah, hoping this isn't too much to ask, but I wouldn't mind seeing that Chambers Brothers clip, as well...:-)

It hasn't been on Youtube for a minute. I'd really like to see it again, and if you posted the whole show, my head might just explode. I'd like to see the Chambers Brothers footage too.

    Here is the Testify footage.

If I post the whole Spring Special showits gonna be huuuuuuuge. I'll see what I can do with sendspace or something. But I am going to the baseball game tomorrow night, so dunno when I can spend time to encode it all.

Also, I have the Gwen Michaels performances with Stark Reality backing her up. And the James Brown Politics episode. The spring special is the only one that has all music.

WGBH is sitting on 35 years of Say Brother footage. As far as I know, they refuse to release it for purchase in any form. I have no idea why, in today's climate where every TV show ever broadcast is on its way to reissue (I'm praying for The Equalizer), a public television station in need of constant revenue refuses to pull the trigger on this. Fans of Funkadelic are not getting any younger - just ask an average teenager if they have ever heard a single song from their Westbound albums (also, ask them if they give a shit about the prospect).

This is great, PJ, thank you very much!

And in that spirit, here are three links to some footage of Placebo for anyone who hasn't seen them yet:

Aw, this is great. The Stark Reality clip on the 101 DVD has more of the beginning, but doesn't have the 45 promo clip ending. Who are the horn players, btw?

And thanks a bundle for "Testify"! I've been longing to see that. If there ever was a gratuitous graemlin-inducing clip, that would definetely be it. I won't do that, though. The footage speaks for itself. That whole ending with the band + folks dancing in silhouette is fucking amazing. I love this stuff!

Please take me to your dealer, George. Or maybe not.

ah ok....that makes sense. Cause I have another Stark reality clip that is a bit longer, but I liked this one better. I'll work on some of the other clips when I can.

there's a guy at all the Detroit/Ann Arbor record shows that sells a DVD of Say Brother performances, I still need to cop that from him one of these days. I got an DVD he put together of Upbeat performances, that was fantastic (Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, Archie Bell & The Drells, Edwin Starr, Marvin & Tammi etc.). Most are lip synched which sucks but still great footage.

Stanton Davis, trumpet (flugelhorn solos on the whole "Acting, Thinking, Feeling" piece, which this clip is basically the middle "Thinking" piece)

don't remember the 2nd trumpeter's name, nor the names of the trombone, alto, and tenor sax players

Carl Atkins is playing baritone sax

and, of course, Phil Morrison, bass, and Vinnie Johnson, drums.

$2.00 donation for a "Say Brother" 45 - thousands of them, want them or not

I have that Upbeat DVD too - the lip-synching doesn't bother me, since I was weaned on shows like Soul Train and American Bandstand where nine times out of ten that's just the way these things were done. For me, it's just the novelty of seeing these great artists doing their thing, leventy-seven years ago.

This stuff is fantastic and PJ...I have a DVD tower and ahhh, um, just saying, uh, y'know, not that you would...err, but with GBH actin' all stingy, mmmm.
    Just sayin.

Ah, yes....the other video I have is of the whole piece (from episode 7, i think). Is the entire piece on the Stones Throw dvd? What was the situation with Stark Reality backing up other singers? I noticed Gwen Micheals...but I havn't watched the rest so I don't know if anyone else did as well.

    -pj

btw: if anyone (Stones Throw/Monty) wants me to remove those, just shoot me a pm. not looking to step on anyones toes.

Cool stuff. WGBH put up a small website for "say brother" which has some clips on it.
    http://main.wgbh.org/saybrother/

Mosey down to the music section (M) for complete and total mind melt.
    http://main.wgbh.org/saybrother/subject.html#M

PS: Stanton Davis also did an LP called "ghetto mysticism," a jazz fusion album.

yep thats the site my friend directed me to for picking which videos I wanted. Apparently the problem is that not all the videos are on VHS yet, so I could only get a few of them (plus the James Brown special).

That's the one with "Funky Fried Tofu", right? I remember hearing that at Upskiboo's house ??? nice. Didn't he do an earlier private/small-press album in a more milesy style?

That Say Brother program listing is madness. Someone ought to unleash all this goodness.
