So the guy that started the record store I work at is having his 40th birthday party tommorow night. He hired the Magnolia Electric Company and HAVEY SCALES to play at the party! My question... Who has seen Mr. Scales in action in the past couple of years? Does he still got it?I can't wait! I'm gonna nerd it up and get my 45's signed!

Please to give full report b/w flix -

When Bobby Moore died a couple of weeks ago, it put an end to my plan
to have him play at my wedding - decided the instant I saw THIS -

You should see if Harvey will do Oak Ridge Boys covers, too

Seriously, I'm envious, and just hope he's a dude who plays his
own hits and maybe other 60's soul jams, and doesn't come out on
some Electric Slide shit with hits of the 80's ...

    DUDE!!! LOVE-IT-IS OG STYLE!!!

  • I will give a full report tommorow. Hopefully with pictures.
Tonight I'm gonna Broadway Freeze while I Get Down on The Yolk!!!

that picture you posted isn't harvey scales fyi. is that the dude who owns the store you work at?

anyhow, yes and no. harvey still has the spirit, if you catch him in the right context it can be a real good time. sometimes he has younger kids playing with him, that can be very bad (in a 8 string bass yamaha dx7 kind of way add 45 minute long version of 'down home blues'). like most chitlin circuit perfomers he does tons of covers. if he has a good older band playing with him it will be dope no matter what he plays. the man has non stop energy, he will usually go through about 25 white stage towels pers set.

i fucking love harvey. the man always pulls up random weirdos from the crowd and forces them to sing the most difficult soul tunes. then he'll say something like, 'natalie cole for real' even if she sings like a spastic walrus. gotta love that. one time he was giving this long talkover intro at some family oriented festival, dude said 'i was smoking on some real nice homegrown" ......at this point the crowd makes a disapointed sound, then he finishes......'marlboro cigarettes!" crowd got all hyped again.

last time i saw him he was rocking with the esquires and the steelers, hoodside in milwaukee. had an all old school-vintage instrument playiing-band, and he ripped a 30 minute version of 'step in the name of love'. never sounded better!!

hope you luck out and get the real deal experience. give harvey a shout from the noble bros.

I realized this the first instant I saw him last night. Damn, Google. Never even seen what he looked like except for the Hotfoot album.

I don't want to say anything about the show until I have the pictures to go with them. There are a lot.
    I'll just say this...

I''d love to see him do The Yolk in person. There are strange, dark undertones in that one, somehow.

"...and I ain't talking about the 'Get Down,' you dig?"

  • HARVEY SCALES is a must see!!! The band last night was a team of true Memphis heavyweights. What did they play? All Stax and HI related tunes!!! No Yolk, no Get Down...nothing. Lots of Otis tunes. They had 1 hour to practice before the show and you would have thought they had been playing together for years. Nobody in the band was familiar with his old material. His stage humor was untouchable. During one of the Otis tunes he neals down and says..."Baby! I get down on my knees and thank the Lord for Viagra!" The highlight was when they played a 15 minute version of "Soul Man" where he led a booty train around the bar, into the backstage area, back to the front of the building, out the front door, down the street a bit, then finally back inside to the stage to finish the song!!! UNFUCKWITABLE!!! He played 2 sets and changed suits and shoes inbetween. He was definitly on fire and I recommend catching his shows. The show was also catered by Ms. Ellen's Soul Food!!! There were cornbread pancakes and chicken bones all over the bar by the end of the night.

I will have many more photos later...here's a few.

    With the birthday boy!

    Are you ready for it...

Andrew, how many cumulative hours do you think you've spent inside the Hi-Tone?
    Just saying.

On nights like this and shirtless soul parties...not enough. Other nights...way too many.

    shirtless soul parties

On the occasions that Danny's erupts into Bacchanalia, I am thankfully not present.
