Purple Rain???

What is Purple Rain, really? It's specifically mentioned in that America song "Ventura Highway" that came out in the 70s: "...I've been hit by purple rain." I've looked on the internet about this topic, and a lot of references to drug slang come up (PCP, as well as syrup). I've got to think that these drug references are all derived from the Prince LP title. There's also mention of fall-out from Agent Orange being called purple rain. This seems to possibly fit the context of the America song -- I can't imagine he was singing about PCP (and certainly not syrup). Or is purple rain simply some psychedelic hippy shit to say, just like "alligator lizards in the air"?I've always wondered about this, and now I've finally become bored enough to ask.

I'll tell you, but first you must purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.
Can I at least wait until the summer?
An would be the least of my problems...
