I wasn't going to go vote because I didn't see the point, but all the kids @ work are making me feel guilty. I'm going to rock the vote or whatever its is that people do now-a-days.
Vote for whoever... Just do it. Cause you can't complain if you don't vote.
What are people thinking the outcome will be?
I was thinking things were gonna stay the same. But the last 2 weeks have me thinking it will be a Conservative minority government with the balance of power being held by the NDP once again.
I am surprised at how ugly the campaigning has gotten. First time ever seeing US styled slandering ads in Canada.
Surprisly not really on as big a scale from the conservatives. Not on the Liberals level anyway. I'm hoping by next election the parties realize this and stop with the smeers and get to pushing their platforms.
Might be why they might win. Harper (Who I don't like) mostly stayed on message with his campaign. Martin has really looked like a deer in headlights the last couple of weeks.

Yeah, my Canadian friends keep showing me the ads going on up there, and all I can say is, "It looks like you guys have been infected with US-style politics. Sorry about that. Or rather, sawry aboot that."
Just to throw some doomsday type thoughts in the mix
Firstly, the conservatives platform and 666 persona of Harper seems to have disapeared in the eyes of the public opinion within 2 months What sucks is that (as we saw down south) power can cause change hella fast and the conservatives got big schemes up their sleeves
Doomsday 1 Canada becomes a 2 party state like democ/republican=liberal/conservat and N.America becomes one whole monster
Doomsday 2 Have you seen the comments Harper passed on the BLOC (''It is a nuisance to Ottawa and does not have its place''). Imagine the conservatives get elected majority, here in Qbc no one will vote conservative, thus Quebec gets no representation in Ottawa. Mad complaints..lets separate..yadiyadiyada... Harper answers by saying fuck the blc and fuck quebec..Alberta is down with it. Starts beef..quebec separate fear/distaraction allows conservatives to continue schemes unnoticed and garner support
OK but more realistly my opinion is that Harper will make some moves on privatisation of health and business laws (environement) on the DL. He won't go after gay marriage and high profile stuff. At least no now Also watch out for his autonomy of provices thing. All province leaders will be happy about this. It will do two things. One spread the seeds of dissent: Alberta/oil money will be loving it but the fed will be deresponsibilized. In politics local power and centralised power sharing usually leads to some patronnage type shit. (province politics from Harris to Charest have been nasty of late) Secondly, this tpe of functionning willingrain itself and be hard to reverse and Harper and conservatives will seem to have done a good job and maintain support becoming serious contendes.
Bottom line for now: In Canada the stat quo was the way to go. It was bad, the liberals deserve the whip they will get but it was Canada..now things are uncertain Bottom line for the future: I wish real opposition could be formed an all powerful stat quo semi-crook party isnt great but rightwing extreme business class as only viable opposition is horrible as well. The bloc is a mystery dark horse in canda politics and the NPD still wont get any seats (green party alliance at least jeez, ''lend us your vote'' how pussy is that)
For you voters not knowing what'sup. Vote fpr your convictions $$$ goes to a party off number of votes so youre never ''wasting your vote''
End of rant. I'm (sadly) predicting conservative majority. Over the passed decade whenever there was a crunch time election shit, literaly, has happened: Sharon, Lepen (thus l'escroc return), Dubya I and II
Why is there the Communist party and the marxist party? Aren't they buddies or am I missing something? Shouldn't they team up and maybe then grab .005% of the vote?
Communists and MLs and probably more interested in their ideology rather than pragmatics, each of their communisms are quite different.
I saw Paul Hellyer speak years back. He's a former high-up in the Liberal Party that left and formed Canadian Action Party. Basically it is about pushing for more home-control over national economy, dealing with things like the Bank of Canada taking on more debt to finance things. More interestingly, Hellyer spoke in favour of international agreements and how we'd deal with aliens from another planet ....

The history of communist party post-1917 is a history of factional splits.
One thing to remember is that communist parties always belong to an international.
After purging most of the trotskyists post-1927, most communist parties were in line with Stalin, following the doctrine of Socialism in One Country. They all belonged to the third international and followed in blind faith with whatever moscow told them.
Sometime after mao came to power, there were splits happening in the third international (I think). It reached a point where you were either with Mao or with Stalin (or Stalin's line). Thus, the communist international broke apart, and all subsequent communist parties in every country were split between:
Communist Party and Communist Party Marxist Lenninist (the mao side)
They cannot agree ideologically, and there is therefore nor reason for them to merge. They are fringe parties, sectarians, and really sort of crazy.
At least the trotskyists got smart and decided to enter the larger left-wing social democratic and/or revolutionary parties.
In many developing or under-developed countries there are even more communist parties. In Greece I believe there are over 30 (trotskyis parties included). Turkey is the worst.
This is also the first election, thanks to the Liberals, in which we've had experience of genuinely vicious American-style negative advertising, complete with ominous music and borderline truths. In the past, the stuff we've described as negative has been pretty tame.
I'm eating this costco roasted chicken right now (breast is too dry, augh). About to head out to vote then come back to watch my beloved leafs get slaughtered once again by the sens.
I'm (sadly) predicting conservative majority. Over the passed decade whenever there was a crunch time election shit, literaly, has happened: Sharon, Lepen (thus l'escroc return), Dubya I and II
OMG is Canada gonna suck as hard as the US now? That's what my Canucks are saying.
HIJACK: Since I've got you all in one place can someone please find me a spare copy of The Real Ellen MacElwaine LP? Pleeeeeease? I need it like the people need to start voting more wisely.
I didn't forget, I just didn't vote on purpose...lol
Shit dog, you done changed the world.
i ruined my ballot every year until the last provincial elections. i'm not going to check off a name if i don't believe in it.
i don't know what Moss' reasons are, but i don't think it deserves the snide brush-off.
i don't think voting for the lesser of all evils is a good approach. even now, as close as we are to a dangerous outcome, i still won't vote "strategically".

I agree, voting strategically is a terrible idea.
I can fully understand the reasons why people do not want to vote, it's not like our current political and economic situation encourage people to vote.
However, there is a large difference between not checking off someone's name because you don't agree with them and not voting because you think it will affect change or accomplish something. If you didn't vote because you couldn't find any party to allign yourself with, then one would have stated as such.
But I gather from MoSS's post that he/she didn't vote as a political protest and/or apathy with our system (which, regardless of the reasons why, in my opinion is inexcusable).
I'd take opinions like Colby Cosh's with plenty of salt. I used to write for the same newspaper he works at. I, along with many others at the newspaper, always said that his 'opinions' are wrong 85% of the time.
I've heard people say and write in columns that negative ads are worse this election, cause it is supposed to be a downword trend we all assume is happening. But I am saying that they are wrong.
Bill Clinton once said that negative campaigning will only stop when it stops working so well.
To be straight - negative campaigning works well, even if people generally don't like it as a whole. I say we might as well get used to it, it is here to stay.

Well, the liberals were really on top with neg ads this year and some downright hurt them large.
i'm in Parkdale - High Park and those fuckers in High Park mess us up every time. Parkdale is mixed (mostly low) income with a lot of renters, and new immigrants, whereas High Park is yuppie hell with a lot of property-owners and old-school, conservative and religious Eastern European folks. i think mixed neighbourhoods are a good thing and important, but in this case, the interests are so disparate that neither community is properly served.
i've seen way more NDP signs in my area than in the past though.

or you could just phone and have 'em come pick you up...

And BTW the ads from last federal election were as negative as these ones.
Question...
Why is there the Communist party and the marxist party? Aren't they buddies or am I missing something? Shouldn't they team up and maybe then grab .005% of the vote?
And what really is The Canadian Action party???

i'm still scared.
I voted NDP. First time not voting liberal. We'll see if other people abandon the libs too.
