My lovely girlfriend was nice enough to buy us two tickets to Puerto Rico for Christmas, so Im not looking for a ho, but rather I would appreciate any travel advice the fine folks at Soul Strut could offer me.Is there any wax to be had? how about good reggaeton cd's and where are the good spots to visit for a taste of the real Puerto Rico. I would appreciate any tips from locals and tourists alike. Frankie Cutlass has me so amped right now, Puerto Rico Ho...

  • where in PR will you be?

  • No plans yet, we fly into San Juan, and I want to hang around and see Old San Juan and then I would like to check out some remote parts of PR for relaxing

    any tips?

  • I just got back last night!

Old San Juan is great, you should set out a whole day to just walk around the old city. See the forts, the art galleries, plazas, churches and parks. It can be a lot of walking but well worth it, really beautiful this time of year. San Sebastian street has a row of bars that can be really fun on the right weekend. Rhumba has live music on some nights, which is always straight salsa fire. El Batey is my favourite dive bar in PR off San Sebastian, I forget the name of the street but anyone around should be able to tell you where it is. The Nuyorikan cafe also has live music and is in some cool alley off Cristo street, again a local or taxi dude should point you in the right direction. They also have really good food. There are a lot of restaurants constantly opening up in the old city but La Mallorca, La Bombonera, and Patio de Sam are the classics. Ostra Cosa is a really cool romantic restaurant also in the old city, but they are kind of slow. If you feel like having a great three hour dinner go there, the owner Alberto is really nice and a little bit of a kook, but makes great food. Pool Palace that just opened up at the bottom of the Old City is the best pool hall in PR hands down.
For authentic PR go to Plaza del Mercado in Santurce. If you like seafood go to La Tasca del Pescador, if not, go to Don Tello's. They are next to each other. Friday nights can get packed with people at the Plaza and a lot of impromptu jams take place. Drinks are also real cheap. The hardware store there has records, as always condition will be a factor, the dude has never been nice to me, but maybe you'll have better luck. the owner of some jazz place in the Plaza is supposed to sell records too, but I have never bought anything from him, nor have I met him. His place is next La Tasca del Pescador and has green heineken awnings.
If you've never been to the island before go to El Yunque rainforest. Go during the weekday, during the afternoon so its not too crowded. Hike down to La Mina falls and enjoy the scenery. If you decide to go in the morning, spend the afternoon at Luquillo beach a short drive away.
I also recommend a night kayak trip in the phosphorescent bay in Fajardo. Check with your hotel concierge they have people and can get you a good deal.
The caves in Camuy are also nice to visit, there are some you can go to on your own or some with tours, its a bit of a drive but worth it.
Have a nice dinner and go to the casino at the El San Juan hotel, have a drink in the lobby, real plush.

Have a great trip and tell us all about it!

    good reggaeton

    hahahahahahahahaha

  • Garcia, Thanks so much my man. I can't wait to get hit up some of these spots.
One last thing, can you recommend a good local or family owned hotel in San Juan? I try to stay away from the big resort & chain hotels.

As for finding "Good Reggaeton" LOL, as with most genres of music the majority that us outsiders get to hear is sh*t, but I got to believe there are some heaters out there, right?

F#ck it, I could put up with Jimmy Buffet as long as I get to sip on some Pina Coladas in paradise.

Thanks Again for the help Garica,

  • No problem, I'll let you know of some hotels/bed&breakfasts later. As towards reggaeton I'm not up on the genre, but you can walk into any music store and you'll see a wealth of stuff, ask any employee and they should help you out. I'm partial to the battle/diss tapes.
