  • As far as the republican thing goes... If the republican party were actually about those things listed above, I might actually be one, but it seems now that they are the exact opposite. All I know is I don't want some (as much as i hate this cliche) 'big brother' govt trying to control everything I do. And thats what I see republicans as.

The only thing Republican politicians don't want the government to control is (their) money.

    Pacman,

The problem with finger pointing is that it presumes there's any ONE party that's accountable and as far as I'm concerned EVERYONE looks bad in this: city, state AND the feds. So yeah, I'm glad Mike Brown is being demoted but frankly, the Mayor of N.O. and the Louisiana governor need to have some hard questions directed at them too. There's no way a meltdown like this could only be at one level. You got a failure of an entire system.

The difference between the mayor and the feds is that. The feds are on some "great job, Brownie!. Oh! who could've thought? Oh! we didn't know! huh? what are you talking about?"

while The mayor is on the ground 24/7 in the trenches saying. "I'll take whatever responsibilty I have to, right now let's rescue some people. people are dying. they keep telling us they're coming but I don't see anybody."

Republican? Yeah, I would consider myself to be one. "Right wing Christian guy?" Yeah, one of those too. Bush supporter after this year? NOPE. Why? He screwed up one too many times for me. The war after 9/11 to me WAS justified, but where is OSAMA and why did we come back with SADDAM like he had something to do with it? Does anyone remember WHO actually attacked us anymore? Why is our military being spread out all over the place and yet when a disaster strikes and we have advance warnings we can't be proactive and only react after the fact?

The fact is this. The Christians in this nation got suckered. Took it hook, line, and sinker. IF anything, I hope this wakes people up the next time they vote. Someone saying they're Christian and someone doing what they're supposed to are two TOTALLY different things. "Let's gang up on the gays and lesbians!" God says to hate the sin, but to LOVE the sinner and the majority of us forgot to do that. The majority of Christians became "closet homophobes". They said, "Yeah, I have a gay/lesbian friend" and in the back of their mind thought "...but I'd NEVER invite him/her over to dinner at MY place." And I won't even get into abortion.

Anyways, I have a few questions for you guys. They aren't necessarily what I PERSONALLY think, but I've been fairly good throughout life to see both sides of the story. Guzzo, this was a good topic to start and I'm glad you did.

Is there such a thing as a "fair and blanced" (no Fox) news report? You can get two different stories from two different places that contradict each other. Which one do you believe and why? Is it the one you WANT to believe that you lean to?

Is the lack of response truly based on race? If NOLA was a bunch of white people living in trailer parks would their (government) response have been different?

Where was the govenor of LA in all of this? If you have 2-3 days to get people out, would you have done it? Why were all of those busses under water? Where was the evacuation plan? If the director of FEMA gets fired, should the Govenor of LA be fired as well?

There are two sides to every story, and the truth lies somewhere between.

Damn Pacman that was so well worded that I don't have a follow up. I'd like to think your sentiment is representitive of 20 & 30 something year old republicans out there, but I guess only time and elections will tell.

I'm an avid fan (yes I said fan) of Fox news. As a stoner I find it to be more hilarious than just about anytihng on comedy central, and at the same time I find it to be infuriating how these shows (which are not meant to be comedies) defends a government who has acted inept. I'd like to think that Fox news is so far fetched that it doesn't represent the "republican" view and in reading what you wrote Pacman I beleive my instincts were right.

crack , malt liquor , irresponsible sex, and a few other short-term methods of escapism work pretty well....but then when the highs come down the problems have multiplied by about 10

Thanks a lot pacman, you're giving me hope... it REALLY bothers me the way Bush et al exploit spirituality to basically do whatever they want and have thus far gotten away with all of it... most of what they're actually doing and promoting is not very Christian at all... I hope there are a lot more folks like you out there, or else we may be screwed...

Real talk!!!! Pair all this with a lack of resources, loss of hope, and condescension and lack of empathy from the powers-that-be and that spells disaster. Black folks will be largely locked out of society in a matter of decades. "Mad Max" in effect and it won't be pretty. I see it everyday in MilwauKKKee already. It's both an inside and outside dilemma that must be resolved. A complex problem indeed and it scares the hell out of me.

I'm not a big fan of the guy, Guz. While I think most "liberals" go out of their way to find reasons to hate this guy (I mean think if Bush had responded perfectly with a flawless recovery plan, do you really think liberals would praise the effort? Absolutely not, some would still find something he did or said to gripe about), some criticism here is appropriate. The man just doesn't carry himself very well. I mean politicians are all full of shit, but at least sound convincing, ya know?

And hell, I don't even call myself a Republican, I try not to get involved. But if I had to choose I'd go Republican for a variety of reasons I won't get into here.

    Peace out.

Lamar thank you for answering. I am about to go on a rant here, because you echo what drives me crazy about so many Bush supports. This is not being aimed at you.

It's convient how short the memory is of people who HATE liberals. To refresh their memory, after 9/11 support for Bush was well over 90% up around 97%. Support for the Afgan war likewise was over 90%. Yet they are so filled with HATE that they believe, that people who are upset about the handling of the current disaster are liberals who go out of their way to find reasons to hate this guy.

We are talking about a president who lied to take us to war.

A president who totally bungled that war.

A president that has taken a balanced budget and turned it into a 7 trillion dollar deficit.

A president that just signed an order to allow Haliburton to under pay it's employees.

I guess he's ok with you guys as long as he isn't caught having sex with an intern. And if he does get caught it would still have to be proven that she really was an intern.

I respect your opinion Laser, but this is interesting, because it is the liberals, in my mind, who seem to be the most vicious and hate filled. Go figure.

Lamar I don't know how to respond to that. I gave specific examples of liberals backing Bush. Then I explained how Bush lost that support. You responded by saying what is in your "mind".

Liberals are mad at Bush for abondoning the war on terror in favor of a vanity war. Conservatives were mad at Clinton because his wife was a bitch and he got a blow job. The difference is liberals care about public policy, conservatives care about peoples personal life.

It's really too bad, I mean each side has their faults and shit, but can't we all just work together?

When George Bush reports to work plenty of liberals will be willing to work with him. Less than a year after taking office he was out campaigning against the democrats that had helped him get No Child Left Behind Past. Liberals who supported him 100% after 9/11.

The number one reason I can't take politics and politicians seriously: Rather than finding dirt on the other party all the time, how about, uh... I dunno, maybe... TRY TO FIND SOME FUCKING SOLUTIONS! Seems to me that should be the first priority of any party. It isn't. That ain't right.

Ummm... Solutions.... Ummm... Perhaps sending help to New Orleans would have been a solution.

  • What's left are more traditional conservatives, many of who, I think, are in conflict over what they've seen happen within the GOP over the last 10 years. I'm sure there's some catchy name for them but whatever: they favor old-fashioned conservative pillars: small government, less federal intervention, fiscal conservatism but social moderatism. They've been the ones who've largely been left out in the cold over the course of the Bush's reign and I think, would be the most comfortable with voicing objections to what they've seen. I don't think they'd go out of their way to vote Democrat though but they might be willing to back more indpenedent leadership (see McCain).

these are the only ones I can respect. these fools are like my dad. i disagreee with most of what they stand for but at least they are PRINCIPLED. sure, they may have voted for Bush, but at least they're consistent, e.g. government-out-of-everything and not just out of my paycheck. and yes these are the ones that have been totally used by Bush. if I were them I'd be reaaaally pissed at him.

these types seem to account for many of the conservative strutters, so where y'all at?!?!? seriously only one or two conservatives have chimed in here.

I don't think we have ever had a No Child Left Behind thread. It is such a conflicted piece of legislation. The biggest complaint is that it is an unfunded mandate.

I work marginal in a school setting. One thing I have seen in the elementary level is an all out effort to reach the bottom kids in each class. In the past the thinking of a lot of teachers was you have to keep the high achieving kids engaged. Likewise you did not want to hold up the whole class because of a few kids. I think there has been a real shift on the focus. I don't have a strong opinion on weather that is a good or bad thing, I know it has it's good and bad points.

Of course as everyone knows the real bad effect has been the focus on testing. I know 3rd grade teachers that use to have kids write reports, or create a diorama, who now have them do True Or False and Multiple Choice worksheets instead so they will be prepared for The Tests.

This is the first I have heard that Marian Wright Edelman deserves the credit (or blame) for NCLB.

Yea, I've always followed Jello Biafra's advise that you want to read stuff like this and get on these peoples mailing lists. You'll be amazied at the stuff they just come out an say when they think they are onyl talking to their "peeps".

I've been on some right wing christian mailing list and they stuff they sent me was just crazy. Crazy charts on every senator and how they vote on gay rights/abortion etc. If the left was this organized people might be more informed.

His most vocal are social conservative, Religious Right types who see Bush as the best conduit they have to winning the culture war at home. So long as Bush sticks to their agenda, he can do no wrong, not at home or overseas. I suspect the 74% of REpublicans who approve of Bush's handling on Katrina fall into this base - they seem the least interested in anything outside of their own narrow focus of outlawing abortion, gay marriage and bringing more Church into state.

    Yes!

This is followed by the new breed of post-Reagan neo-cons who don't care so much about domestic social policy as they do about foreign policy. THese are the ones who think Iraq is an important mission, regardless of the series of false pretenses that sent us there. Their primarily invested in how the U.S. is exporting its ideology overseas and they see Bush as the right man to do it, presumably (I think) as an extension of Bush Sr. and Reagan's efforts in this area. I would their view on Katrina is mostly cautious but many of them, from what I've seen, are too busy defending the Iraq War to really have a say in how relief efforts are going.

Neo-cons are no fans of Bush Sr. They think he sold out by not taking out Saddam in the 1st Gulf War. Reagan is a big hero.

This group is mostly called Economic Conservatives as opposed to the Social Conservatives. People like Pat Buchannan are in this camp. He's constantly attacked Bush's Iraq policy for instance, and there's lots of mumbling Economic Conservatives who think that Bush spends too much and hasn't cut any government programs in the budgets.

and there's lots of mumbling Economic Conservatives who think know[/b] that Bush spends too much and hasn't cut any government programs in the budgets.

This is what gets me the most - I'm no Republican, but where are the real Republicans? This administration spends more tax dollars than the previous democratic administration, and this isn't a problem with these people?
What IS a "Republican" these days, anyway?

  • W.'s presidency has been rife with stumbles and missteps, many major and countless minor (ex. the shout-out to Trent Lott?!?). He is one of the most ungraceful people I've ever seen in my life. I still don't know how he got the top job (I mean I do know [his lineage], but still don't get it). His motivations and actions are clear: He doesn't give a fuck about anyone aside from the Top 1 percentile. Everything else is lip service.

  • I respect your opinion Laser, but this is interesting, because it is the liberals, in my mind, who seem to be the most vicious and hate filled.[/b] Go figure.

    Examples please...

The only examples I have are from personal experience. Friends of mine I speak with everyday, people I work with everyday... of these people the ones who say they are liberal seem to be the most bitter for some reason (legit or not) or another.

The liberals I know definitely did not back Bush after 9/11.

The liberals I know are always saying shit like "I fucking hate Bush", "I fucking hate Hannidy", "Hannidy is the fucking anti-christ", or "Bush equals Hitler"... wtf??

I don't "hate" anybody. I've been very unhappy with some peoples decisions, but I don't hate anybody.

Am I saying Republicans are more at peace with themselves or some shit? Absolutely not. I'm just making an observation: The liberals I know seem to hate a lot. Or at least they say they do.

Uh, have you never seen pictures of those Christian dudes carrying "God Hates Fags" signs, screaming with flushed faces and spittle flying out of their mouths? It's one thing to hate a single person whose callous desicions have hurt and killed hundreds of thousands of people, and another entirely to hate a large group of people you've never met just because they're different from you.

  • Yeah, of course I've seen[/b] those idiots. But I don't know[/b] any of them. That was my point, people I know.

I never said there weren't any hate filled Republicans.

I see. I was going by your original statement that "in your mind" liberals were more hate-filled and vicious.

  • I did say that, didn't I? My bad.

I did not mean to imply that "all liberals must be hate filled because the ones I know are". I probably should have clarified myself better in my original statement.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Oh... so now I'm funny huh? THATS REVERSE RACISM!!!!

  • I know they are few & far between on this board but they are out there.

On my already infamous talk with my play-grandma yesterday we both realized we don't have too many Right wing friends and don't know what their current opinion is of Bush, Fema and the administrations reaction to Katrina.

Left wingers:[/b] please don't attack these dudes for stating what they believe. I genuinely want to know what is being thought of the current situation. FALL BACK

I only voted for a Republican once and it was in 2004, to punish the democrats for not banishing the anti-war movement from the campaign. Also because I thought Kerry would (as he promised) leave Iraq to the armies of Arab dictators. So as a single issue, pro-war voter, I voted against Kerry. Now this. What is there to say? The former executive director of the Arabian Horse Association gets to run FEMA because he's a family freind. Red Cross workers are blocked from entering the super dome. The federal government is trying to censure news reports. Unforgiveable. It's a combination of incompetance, cronyism and fecklesness. It's also terrible that the White House is privately telling reporters that the failure in the rescue effort is the fault of the local and state authorities, while publicly saying it's not the time to point fingers. I suspect there is quite a lot of blame for the governor and mayor, but it doesn't matter. George W. Bush is the president of the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world, a disaster of this scale is the federal government's problem. That's why we have FEMA. That's why we have a department of homeland security. Because when something like this happens, no one can expect the state or the city to handle it. So my current opinion of G-dub is doo-doo.

As for the Bush doesn't care about black people. That doesn't wash. I mean there is a better explanation for the fuck up here. The administration is corrupt and incompetant. So had Connecticut been flooded, I think there is a good chance that Michael Brown would have screwed up the evacuation of Greenwich as well. Did the levees, pumps and drainage system of New Orleans suffer federal budget cuts because of racism? I doubt it. The Army Corps of Engineers budget has been cut by democrats and republicans for years. This is not say that race is not an issue in America, or that Bush has not cut federal aid to poor, black and urban areas. But that's got nothing to do with the ham handed response in New Orleans. I mean ignoring dire warnings from NOAA and infrastructure experts is explained by the fact that the guy who is supposed to prepare for these emergencies is an overfed lobbyist with no experience in such matters. Unforgiveable!
