Hard to put into words how he could get to me, but if you could imagine yourself in his place, playing that way, playing that history, it's beyond notes, it's beyond the emotions, it's going with him on that journey as he plays.
I was lucky enough to see him in Manchester in '93. I was stood 10ft from him. It was loud. It was more intense than Slayer. Seeing people slack-jawed when he was vocalising, because what he wanted to - nay, had to - express had exceeded the boundaries of the instrument.
I remember leaving and walking outside and thinking, "Well, reality fucking sucks." I went with a couple of really good jazz players and they were torn between throwing all their shit in the river, abandoning music or being happy to have witnessed playing like that and realising there was no "L" to take.
Musicians who can take it there, any genre, are priceless.
I did a double-take when I saw an article, overshadowed by news of other musician deaths this week, in my feed. I read last month that a biopic is being made ("Meu Nome É Gal")
Greeting to Saud (Elevation | Impulse! 1974) Prince of Peace (Izipho Zam | Strata-East 1973) Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah (Jewels of Thought | Impulse! 1970) The Creator Has a Master Plan (Karma | Impulse! 1969) Upper Egypt & Lower Egypt (Tauhid | Impulse! | 1967) Love is Everywhere (Love In Us All | Impulse! 1974) You’ve Got to Have Freedom (Journey to the One | Theresa 1980) Origin (Rejoice | Theresa 1981) Moon Child (Moon Child | Timeless 1990) Shukuru (Shukuru | Theresa 1985) Astral Traveling (Thembi | Impulse! 1971) Harvest (Pharoah | India Navigation 1977)
I can't emphasize enough how great of a songwriter I think she was. All the alternate versions and demos from Tusk that have been dripping out over the last 20 years highlight all the brilliants facets of those songs she (and others in the band) wrote.
And my eldest got really into that weird little album of new songs that Lindsay and her put out a few years back. It grew on me a bit too!
For the longest time I thought that he was the brother of Roberto. My teacher explained the phrase "cara feia pra mim é fome", coincidentally. Descanse em paz.
Daniela Giordano, Miss Italia '66, actress and friend of a friend. She was a beautiful, intelligent and all around kind woman who, out of the blue a few years ago, mailed a personalized autograph to me.
