Cartman is good. And very funny, but he just doesn't have the depth of appeal that Homer does. Everybody loves Homer, from your Gran, to your baby nephew. Pulling that off, and still being as sharp as the Simpsons (was) is no mean feat.
I used to be obsessed by this show when I was a kid, think I still have vhs copies of all the episodes on 60min tapes from when they used to show repeats. Would also recommend Danger Man, Patrick McGoohan's earlier, more straitlaced series as well.
On a related note, if you ever get the chance, would highly advise checking out Portmeirion in Wales, the location for the filming of Prisoner. Seeing all those crazy buildings first hand is quite

Flipping HARD over TV = NAGL. Like they did with "Lost". I am just too miserable a person to participate in mass enthusiasm...
But I will check "The Wire" now. But I sense I may find it depressing. "24" always has struck me as "Die Hard [n]" (Readers Digest version). Again, hard foll flippery = crucifix.

Humour: Steptoe and Son The Phil Silvers Show Tony Hancock Ripping Yarns - Michael Palin's finest. Certain Simpsons episodes, esp. Venezuelan death chilli one and 3-eyed mutant fish. Family Guy. I can't watch Southpark without thinking of the nerdiness of the creators. I know too many people like that, so :crucifix:

Non-Humour: Hill Street Blues. Jesus Martinez and Caruso as gang leaders. Columbo. My wife is related to Columbo - she always stops me as I am about to walk out of the door... The Rockford Files. I've been borrowing the complete series ... this show is like none other. The Henson family is at their best with the puppetry/CGI and its a nice change from Star Trek. Star Trek (at least Next Generation) was rather devoid of emotion ... people apparently evolved so that they could take things in stride. Well, FarScape is quite the opposite. Very fun ... though I do recommend watching the episodes in order if at all possible. Easy to get lost if you don't.
And, as for Battlestar Galactica, I haven't given the new one much of a chance yet. But could it really be better than this?

That was back when David Simon was far less precious with his shit, had his paternalism more in check, and was less prone to flattening his characters to make them better function as symbols. Homicide is Prince on Warner Brothers, The Wire is Prince on his own--fewer boundaries did not exactly make for stronger work, you know what I mean?
They're both my dudes, but for real, Frank Pembleton eats Omar Little for breakfast.
The Wire still sits at the top of the list (though Simon's "go home, please" comments during Freddie Gray protests have left a sour note).
Homicde has not aged well imo.
mix of new and old: Happy Valley - BBC1 Survivor's Remorse - best female characters on TV without a doubt Good Times Walking Dead - has ebbs and flows, but I appreciate the pro-democratic socialism undercurrent WKRP in Cincinnati The Fall - BBC2 Mr.Robot - I don't love it love it, but it is doing some unique things that I appreciate Broadchurch (Britain) - Season 1 was snoozy, I loved Season 2 Peepshow
According to bodega boys the Wire, Star Wars and the Beatles are the three pillars of caucacity, so I have a duty to cosign the Wire. That and it's good. Simpsons also ranks, because even the shitty seasons are more watchable than most else, if not as groundbreaking as the first 8 or 9.
This show is ok, nothing is really blowing me away right now to call this a future classic. The murder plot isn't needed in my opinion. I think the guys story of keeping the label alive can hold the show on it's own. That and all the popular musicians or industry people of that era showing up in every episode helps too, along with the music.
