Lee Moses vs baby huey

Impossible to pick one
Lee is a great guitar player and has such a great voice but man that baby Huey lp was one of the first albums I found when I really started collecting soul music
It's a draw
File under one lp wonders

    "Hard Times" is too ill.

    Baby Huey for me.

  • Lee Moses wins out for me, his voice is just something else, raw as hell. The album is amazing in itself, but  "Bad Girl" is one of my favourite songs ever, such a killer 45

both are great, I can't decide who is better.
I absolutely love Lee's version of "I'll be there":

These are hard filed next to each other for obvious reasons.
I think with a gun to my head Huey maybe?  But shit.  Lee's California dreaming is so fucking brutal.
Maybe my favorite cover of anything ever.  Both are so good end to end.
    Sophie's choice...

Are there any other records that are in this style that compare at all?

But the two are forces of nature.

Lee Moses LP has more staying power as a sustained listen.

I think Baby Huey would have been a lot more fun to experience live.  Dude is incredibly HYPED up on his Living Legend LP.

With that being said, Lee Moses had better songs and was more melodic and soulful.

There is a lot of similarities, though....

Still have yet to find the Lee Moses raer.

    Can I say this one?

I'd take either over East of Underground.

I think it's safe to say 10 years later Baby Huey and Lee Moses trumps the uber-raer of EOU.  The back story is cool and it's mythical "raerness" is cool, but give me a James Brown album any day.  Plus that record is all covers!

Lee definitely less "manufactured" than Huey.  Don't think he ever straightened his hair & performed in his pyjamas.  Lee is tougher throughout his catalog, all the 45s are killer.  Huey is all just pretty much about that one LP.

Baby Huey died at 26 addicted to heroin. Despite making few recordings he had 7 years as a dynamic live act that included his raps.

The best BH song, I think, is better than the best LM song. Likewise with the worse.
    I'll go with Baby Huey.
