I'm a huge Bobbie Gentry fan.
Her parents are Portuguese.
She spent the first half of her childhood in Mississippi, second in LA.
I've heard this one played in soul sets.
It's about a mom who pimps her daughter.
My favorite country artist right now is Chris Ledoux.
His records are hard to find.
You can youtube him. Almost everything he did was great.

Embedding has been disabled on this one otherwise I would have posted the video directly. I like how it has some fuzz guitar that you don't normally hear in country music.

this is nice - it really does have a soulful vibe. the horns are a nice touch.
edit: i've always thought this could crossover the other way:
I like Dolly and Emmy Lou. The Trio lp with Linda Ronstadt should be avoided. Their agents, managers, producers were all fighting and the lp is flat and slick.
Most Dolly lps from the 60s, 70s and 80s only have a few great moments. But for $1 you can't go wrong. Even (or especially) the ones with Porter Wagner.
Now that country radio is no longer playing her she is turning out her best albums. CDs are good to pick up for road trips.
Between singing with Gram Parsons and signing a major label deal Emmy Lou had a band in DC. I was in High School and heard her a number of times. Preferred another singer doing much the same thing, Liz Meyers. Danny Gatton was in her band.
I'm not a Waylon fan. Amanda I love. Jody Stecher does a great version too.

Buddy Emmons is the real deal in steel:
I am kind of a sucker for that dollar bin staple that is Jim Reeves:
And hey, check out a country mix i did a few years back:
That was nice! Edgar Meyer kilt it.
Every roots/bar band should be covering that song, blues, RnR, R&B, country, don't matter.
