Not a done deal yet, but I suspect Steve Baller knows how to get things done.

Almost four times as much as the previous high water mark for an NBA team.

I tried to link to the ESPN article but Soul Strut denied me because it was 'blacklisted' ?

Yeah. That's some crazy money... I thought the Lakers were valued just a bit over a billion.

They aren't paying for any land (no staples center in the deal) just the actual franchise.

The Dodges had a 2.1 billion deal last year but that included Chavez Ravine (Dodgers Stadium/ parking, etc)

Nice...Clippers won't even need a mascot anymore. Just imagine this dude running around Staples with a t shirt cannon and a cape:

This really sucks for us in Seattle. Ballmer was our money man if we were ever to get a NBA team again in Seattle. He has no intentions on moving the Clippers out of L.A., and by purchasing the Clippers means he was tired of waiting around trying to get a team in Seattle. Obviously, no expansion, or any team on the table for Seattle for probably many more years.

Yeah, it does suck. ESPN has a piece on their site that addresses this, and concludes that bringing a franchise to Seattle will now cost in excess of $1 billion.

    Ouch. :face_melt:

And the Dallas Cowboys and NY Yankees must be worth $7-10 billion.

Ballmer moved on from that notion quite a while ago. Chris Hansen is the guy now, and has been for some time. Did you follow any of the story of what happened with him and the Kings over the last three years? He lost a ton of money over that, and he's still at it... seems like he's made it a personal mission.

Oh yeah, I followed every minute of it. Though Hansen has tons of money, he was really the main face behind getting a team back here in Seattle, and Ballmer was the silent partner that was going to provide more of the money behind it. Hansen did lose lots of money after the Kings fiasco, and believe he will continue to try to get a team. Losing Ballmer really lowered the percentages of getting a team here anytime soon though. Good thing for the Kings fans that David Stern was able to do everything he could to ensure that Sacramento could keep their team--he didn't want to have another "Sonicsgate" fiasco on his hands, ironically enough.

Yeah, I was really moved by his whole "moving teams is bad for the league" stance, after having personally overseen the move of something like seven teams during his tenure.

Clippers for 2Bil. Bad investment if this is purely for owning and operating an NBA franchise. There's gotta be more to it for that kind of money.

If they retain Doc Rivers, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and continue to be a Playoff team, they will be the premier team of LA.

With Kobe on his way out, I dont see the Lakers returning to their elite status anytime soon.

Now if everyone breaks out of there (coaching staff & roster) and they have to rebuild the brand, I would say he severely overpaid.

In my Private Mind Garden, they let the Lakers have Stapes and build their own arena.

I was never cool w/ sharing a space when it comes to franchises.

No doubt he took the tried and tested path of securing obscenely large loans against the team's assets rather than stumping up his own money. Balmer will personally do all right even if it the brand tanks.

Ballmer is somehow as embarrassing as Sterling.

    "Exsssellllennnt..."

  • Always follow the money! Balmer getting an NBA Team isn't about owning a prestige team, its to get into the juicy revenue that the entire league will be generating and quite astonishingly, sharing...

Sports Business Daily: Inside NBA's revenue sharing

Now this was written two years ago, so long as over all NBA revenues remain strong or grow then getting in at the trough, anywhere at the trough, will be lucrative. That is why Donald Sterling and his wife didn't want to give up the team in the first place.

  • The NBA orchestrated this deal with Ballmer to get him the Clips. It was their gift to him for using Seattle as leverage to scare all these cities (Sacramento, Milwaukee, etc.) into shaking down their towns for new arenas. Hoping Ballmer will now use his power as an NBA owner to help Seattle get a team.
