Yesterday I aquired a nice modern painting at a auction. I like the picture a lot, but unfortunatly I don't know
the name of the artist. It has a signature but I can't tell what it means.
To find out the artist's name I would like to show it to some art savy people. Is there an art message board equivalent
to soulstrut, where I can ask people to identify an artist ?

Thanks in advance!

it's painted with oil colours, size is 80 cm x 60 cm and porbably from the 60s or 70s. It was aquired from the collection of a deceased architect from Nuremberg. His widow told me that the artist's name might be "Hunt".
Unfortuantly I can't find an artist with this name who's stlye corresponds with the picture or the signature.

Did you throw that pic of the signature in a google image search? It's worth a try.

I wasn't aware of that google search filter yet. I just tried it, but with no usable result. Thanks for the hint anyway.

I've tried to use image search a number of times.
The result I want is similar images.
This has never been the result I received.

I went to the google campus for a training and saw ways that it can work, but like you, I've been frustrated with results.

One really cool tip I learned was using image searches for when you don't really know all of the needed info. Like you know there's a book on guerrilla warfare with a blue cover, but you can't remember the title. "Guerrilla warfare book" as the search and then use the filter to sort by color. I've used it a few times with success, working as a librarian.

    I was not clear.
I was talking about 'search by image' where you take an image and drop it into the google search box.

For text searches I often do image search and find it very useful.
^ The sentence does not scan, but hopefully you know what I mean.

Gotcha on both parts. We were talking about the same thing. I was saying dropping in an image often doesn't work.

The other part was just a semi related tip.

I tried to do some armchair research but i don't know anything. its wierd because you can almost make out the letters in that stamp, which is probably the stamp of the shop that sold it. I could sort of make out the letters "hans" in the bottom part, but doing a search of german city names on wikipedia I didn't see anything that would match the rest of that blob. The big cursive letters in the middle looks like "Arthur Bi**h" but its so hard to tell.

Interesting puzzle. If you figure it out let us know.

thanks for your effort! At the moment I don't know who or where to ask. It will probably remain a mystery.

Why don't you try this popular TV show? It's even aired on bavarian TV.

Honestly, I don't think this picture is something really extraordinary and worth to be broadcasted about. Secondly I'm more than camera-shy. Just the thought of beeing seen by potentially 100 million people makes me shiver with fear. :zooted:

My gut feel is that the place is a Greek island. Not Santorini because everyone paints the domes there.

    Ios maybe.

Yes, it does and I'd guess late 50s to early 60s.

After inverting the image and messing with the contrast some it looks like "Arthur Burton" to me.

Arthur Gibbes Burton was possibly the owner at one point?

I'd have to smell it, but from here it's looking pretty certain you've got your hands on an Arthur Bitch.

Honestly I don't think the last name on that stamp is "Burton". This picture was bought from a german collector in Germany, whose rest of the collection consisted mainly of pictures by german artists and I guess they were bought in domestic galleries. It's more likely that the name is a german one.
I'm still groping in the dark what the name might be, though.
