this website i contirbute to has had a very successful series of mixes consisting of that brief period from approximately ???92 to ???97: the New Jack Swing sound got dated and soulful club music became much closer to the Hip-Hop productions of the time to create this Urban R???n'B type of music.
here are the mixes
do you agree with the categorization and please post more examples
its basically post new jack no too much rapping pre timbo R-n-B

Not to be reductive of what obviously represents a lot of work and affection from your dudes, but I guess I'm old enough to think it's weird to see five years worth of the bread and butter of black radio conceptually framed as some kind of "niche" mix.
its mostly about naming that period where boys-II-men and grandpuba would coexist on a 12"
These mixes are really good.
Please tell me y'all aren't British.
So its tough to box in a whole era of R&B as Post-"Subset" unless you want straight influences vs overall.
But we can have fun curating what came after NJS petered out.
BlackStreet was Post NJS. The samples werent as rigid and easy to recognize, but still Riley had his techniques down pat.
Its smells like Hip Hop Soul to me.
Its about time you young fuckers get to the 90's and graduate from the 80s.
Will post if anyone is interested again.
Scrolling thru my iTunes......
Hip Hop Soul - nutshell.....
Michel'le drops her singing over beats w/ Dre & Yella in '89 . But its kinda Harder New Jack Swing...more towards str8 Hip Hop production.
Mary sings over beats and sings to the beat vs just singin'......'92.
Behind the curve Michael Jackson recruits Teddy Riley for Dangerous on some glossy NJS shit....in '92.
R.Kelly & The Public Announcement clone Aaron Hall's vocals and Teddy's steez....in '92.
1993 -
Intro - Come Inside.....cant remember their club banger.
II D Extreme - Cry No More.....mid-tempo harmonizing shit.
I think Boys II Men were out as well. NYS steez.
A Laface Family X-Mas - OutKast - Players Ball
R.Kelly - Sex Me.......12 Play.....out growing NYS
Toni Braxton - first album....LaFace Atlanta NYS
1994 -
Blackstreet - Teddy regroups but leaves the James Brown shit and drum patterns of the OG behind
Aaliyah - At Your Best.....Age Aint Nuthin But a Number
Janet - That's the Way Love Goes
Mary J Blige - My Life.....steps her shit up...blueprint improved
1995 -
Jodeci - Freek N You....forget about it
Biggie appears on R.Kelly's (You To Be) Happy
D'Angelo - Brown Sugar - Neo Soul enters the room
Mariah Carey - jumps on the "hood boat" and recruits Big Baby Jesus. Suburban White chicks flip out.
1996 -
Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite - Neo Soul's has more folks at the party
Blackstreet - No Diggity
Dru Hill - first album.....Tell Me was already a hit from some soundtrack before
R.Kelly, Keith Sweat and Angela Winbush help recreate the Isley Bros.....Mr Biggs and Puffy create the Float On remix w/ Lil Kim and 112.
Ginuwine - Pony is a banger....Timberland becomes household
Tony Toni Tone - House of Music - throwback steez. Neo Soul and them, but gets help from DJ Quik for the club banger
Donell Jones - In The Hood
Johnny Gill - Its Your Body -slow jam featuring Roget Troutman before he passes.
Keith Sweat - Twisted - NYS veteran is still doin it.
Aaliyah - Hot Like Fire.....Missy and them
Toni Braxton - Your Makin Me High....banger
702 - Steelo - Voices in My Head banger
1997 -
R. Kelly Gotham City....Batman in Chicago, while the beat sounds like Timbo/Southern steez. Whatever u wanna call it that beat pattern.
L.S.G. - My Body - Old men singing w/ a bunch of mc appearances.
Erykah Badu - On & On .....Neo Soul cements itself.
Mary J Blige - Love is All We Need.....Nas......this aint NYS
Whateves.......theres a gang of singles/moments i left out.......That Method Man & Mary shit really stabbed NYS in the back.
To bracket this era....you'd have to have an end mark.
What happened in 97-98 to make it a cut off point?
Who rearranged the game? When did Hip Hop Soul, regular- ass R&B, Neo Soul, and Hip Hop evenly collide or dissolve???
The only thing that comes to mind that is Lauryn Hill in 1998.
batmon dropping knowledge i will share with the guys on friday (playing all vinyl set in my town) and get there take on the cutoff
puffy??s reign i think its the atttitude in the beats..moe bee's lush sound got played out and it chaged rap and rnb's approach towards more electronic synth stuff and bigger studio drums
