Heard on another site yesterday that he was very ill with terminal cancer, so might well be true!

Looks like it's true unfortunately. Hospitalised with Stage 4 cancer then as mentioned above Lalah Hathaway has reported he's dead.

Don Blackman was one of the first sort-of classic digger funk albums that i got my hands on, and used to jam all the time. i played a cut from it every few weeks on my college radio show my sophomore year.

"Donald Blackman made his transition early this morning. He was a friend, a mentor and one of the craziest, zaniest, most beautiful cats any of us have ever known.

And one hell of a musician.

He was one of the leaders of the Jamaica, Queens music scene in the seventies and eighties. A lot of us learned from him...Omar Hakim, Bernard Wright, myself...he taught us all. Gonna listen to the "Don Blackman" album for the rest of the week. If you don't have it, you're missing out.

R.I.P. Donald."
