This been my fave since time. Bassie gets it in on page 1.

    Pity I am already married.

  • Johnny Lytle - Gonna catch that boat. Best narration ever.

    Eddie Gale "The Rain"

Sparse, folky opening with solo female voice and acoustic guitar and then...boom! Full on rhythm section with wailing choir. Real powerful opening that still melts my face.

    Johnny Lytle - The Man

Seedy, late night noir crime jazz slow walking bass line, then BOOM huge euphoric symphonic three ascending and three descending vibes and organ blasts further into the track.

I wish I could hear that for the first time again.

And honorary mention to Working Week for the vast and sprawling spaghetti western intro to the 12" of Venceremos. So good.

  • Cosign on Soul Sides and Sunflower, but for me this is and will always be the game over of intros

  • I gotta go with Mal Waldron "status seeking"...the bass and cello build this tension that Dolphy's sax just tearing into it obliterates...gave/gives me chills. I admit that a lot if it is sentimental. The first time I heard it was 15 or so years ago after digging with a friend and we went back to his house to listen to our finds. The Waldron was one of his finds...just sitting there on the floor in front of the speakers, just finishing up a joint, the needle dropped and I was just "whoa" when that record started.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned.

    Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay

  • I like this because it just sets everything up so nicely...at 1:21 the trumpet just drops in so smooth
