recommend some London/Paris hotels

I'm doing a little investigation into some spots for a possible European Vacation (no National Lampoon, yes Honeymoon).Any Euro strutters wanna recommend some cool hotels in Paris or London? Or maybe Yankee Strutters who globetrot?I like stylish, modern, hip, nice but not mega-expensive. Small is good, or medium. Near good stuff. Boutique hotels are cool. lemme know, folls! here or via PM.

For the wife's 30th on Saturday, we stayed in the Great Eastern Hotel in Liverpool Street, London.
Great modern rooms, three restaurants (all Conran) in the grounds, two great bars (and the 'exclusive' GE Club members bar) and in a handy location (there's an exit straight into Liverpool Street train station).
The West End is only 15 minutes away on either the Tube or on a bus.



I'd stayed there before, but it proved again to be a great location.
Not cheap, but not overly expensive if you book through Expedia.com or somewhere.

It's out in Shepherd's Bush in West London, which isn't right in the heart of London, but is well served by the Underground. It's got a cool spa as well. As a side note, it seems to have supplanted the Columbia as the touring rock'n'roller's hotel of choice, so you can sit in the bar trying to work out who are the legit middle-ranking indie-rockers and who are the wannabes while you get your sip on.

For touring hip hoppers and R'n'B superstars it seems to be the St Martin's Lane hotel...I always like The Rookery on Cowcross Street for quirky, romantic rooms although it's not cheap and you probably wouldn't hang out there in the daytime too much, the Covent garden Hotel is nice too...Brown's is good, and there's another big Schraeger number called the Sanderson which is chic, huge and has a great spa. Not exactly brimming with atmosphere though.

Check out this guide for nice London hotels: I had a hand in writing and commissioning the original one so I've visited nearly all of these and stayed in a few of them. The apartments are pretty good.

Compared to other places the Pellirocco in Brighton is good value, no question. I love that place although you have to admit that it's more kitsch than swank. But definitely fun, if you get the right room. I'd highly recommend Brighton for a couple of nights too.

Hi Anna, I'm not sure what your cost levels are, but I stayed at a nice place in Paris called the Hotel Beaumarchais (which, like Bapt recommended, is on Oberkampf) - I had a tiny but clean and well maintained room (w/ bathroom and shower) for 75 Euros a night, and it's in the 11th arrondissment, which I found to be a cool neighbourhood (it's also right next to the Marais which is a cool district, too).



The big restaurant thing going on there was that sous chefs from Michelin places were quitting to start small bistros, that generally offered good values. Here are also some great restaurants that I went to (last year this time, information may no longer be correct) usually at lunch, for a 20-30 euro set menu:



C'Amelot, on rue Amelot, in the 11th

L'Epi Dupin, on rue Dupin, in the 6th

Les Epicuriens du Marais, in the 3rd



and I never made it to La Regalade in the 14th, since it was all booked up. But I ate very well at the above places.
