Is "Haiku" Don Ellis' weakest album?

I just picked this up for cheap-- in my eyes, until this point, he could do no wrong. I thought it was a sure shot (mps 73) but oh, was I wrong. This album is really snoozy and i thought there would be at least one or two tracks that were salvagable, but no. Easy classical yawns.Connections, to me, is unfuckwithable, Fillmore and Tears of Joy are nice. I don't even mind the album w/ George Russel (blanking on the title)! What warnings do you have for further Ellis acquisitions?

Oh yeah, and thanks for the partial nudity, Don. So unnecessary.

I like most of his stuff from 67-72: Electric Bath, Goes Underground, Shock Treatment, At Fillmore, Tears Of Joy, Connection. Of his later stuff, i really like this one:

But yeah, Haiku is a snooze. Soaring (MPS '73) isn't all that exciting either, but it has it's moments. Avoid this one at all costs:

    ZZZZZZZzzzzzzz

  • theres a nice open bassline on haiku though.
