Although a serious player and very complete musician
when the guy "was asked" to play funky, he was the funkiest.......

miles "Live evil"......
hubbard "first light"
Farrell "moongerms"

imo the funkiest drummer in CTI

what abt the albums he did solo or that project named compost ?

I used to be pretty funky when I had the chance to play with decent drummers

  • Timeless with John Ambercrombie and Jan Hammer on ECM has got some nice parts to it.

I just picke dup a pretty decent free-jazz lp of his on Milestones. Can't recall the name...

  • definitely some funk on Joe Henderson's "Black is the Color" and "Multiple"
"Backwoods Song" on the first Gateway lp on ECM
the two Hubbard/Turrentine/Hancock "In Concert" CTI's
the Compost Life is Round lp has some beats

  • superfunky Jack Dejohnette moments:
Compost - Life Is Round LP
his own Sorcery LP (check that super naaaaasty drum break on "Epilog", I think that's the one, it's the last track on side 2)
Johnny Hammond - Big Sur Suite from Higher Ground LP
Freddie Hubbard / Stanley Turrentine Live In Concert Vol. 1 (he gets downright funky on "Povo" along with Herbie Hancock's extra wah-ed out Fender Rhodes)

Compost's self-titled LP is good, 2nd one not so.

For his solo stuff, Sorcery has one good Soul-Jazz moment with a drum break intro.

Don't forget CTI Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Funkfather, Rocksteady etc This is some serious jazz/funk drumming on long 10-12 min songs.
